How do I unlock a 3G if I don't know the firmware or baseband?

The firmware and baseband is unknown. It was used before with ATT but has since been out of use for several months. It was never previously unlocked or jailbroken. I can't tell which firmware or baseband it has because when I turn it on it just says "no simcard installed, insert a valid sim card with no pin lock to activate iphone." Putting in a sim doesn't work (i tried a couple including an ATT sim).

How do I jailbreak and unlock this phone? I tried the latest black rain but it simply hangs at "entering recovery..."

I'm working with windows.

How can I get this phone working again?

If it has not been used for a while, you can be pretty sure it is not running OS 3.1

Try redsn0w instead. Or use iRecovery to get more details of the iBoot version which can indicate what OS you are running.

So just google redsnow tutorial and follow instructions more or less?

I found a copy of irecovery for windows but I can't find a good manual or instructions for it. I see only instructions for reseting from recovery mode but I'm not sure that's what's happenign since there is the message about the sim. How do I use iRecovery to get the version? I can't find instructions on this at all.

This looks super confusing, risky and easy to fuckup. Do I really have to do all this?

I am just looking for the easiest way to unlock this phone. My buddy doesn't care about running unofficial apps but I guess you have to jailbreak to unlock?

I have a 3GS and did everything in 30 seconds with blackra1n, super easy no hassle. THe only thing that sucks is I can't turn my phone off.

Isn't there something easy for 3G? I cannot find any clear cut instructions on what to do anywhere and there seems to be a million versions of different tools xsnow, ziphone, pwange, etc. etc. etc.

Continuing to play with this I tried putting in an another SIM, after putting in the SIM pin it stays in recovery mode and even itunes won't access it because it says the phone is "locked with a passcode" and to please enter my passcode but I can't because the recovery screen is the only thing that appears. iRecovery will not recognize the phone.

Of course this also means I can't follow the redsnow tutorial...
