Can I official unlocked Australia iPhone in other country

I bought iPhone 3G from Australia. Then I upgrade to frimware 2.2.1 accidentally. Can I ask my friend in Australia to call to carrier to unlock it? Then, wait until the unlock process is completed and sync with the iTune? (I have heard that after unlocked by carrier, you just sync with the iTune then the process will be completed)

This works in theory. The carrier needs some information about your iPhone to do so, probably the IMEI. They submit this to Apple where it is entered into the database with factory unlocked.
After that you can use iTunes, it will activate the iPhone.
The process may take a day or so for the carrier/Apple to manage.

Just out of curiosity, what provider is it locked to?
Optus are currently unlocking iphones free of charge.
But if your with telstra, they charge $150 :(

Optus also cost you $120 for pre-paid iPhone or you have to use it for 6 months.
