3G error 9, unable to fix for months

iTunes version (9.1.1)
iPhone OS version (before restore/update) (e.g. 3.1.12) <-- Not precisely sure
Platform OS X
OS Version 10.6.3

iPhone doesn't start, wasn't jailbroken when this started happening.
Launches with Apple Logo and then Recovery Mode, then receive error 9.
I have tried using selected UNTOUCHED previous iPhone OS inc. 3, 3.1 etc. for restore, to no avail.
DFU mode doesn't fix the issue.
Have tried many different computers incl. Windows and other OS X's
