Default Power Consumption : Turning off Edge and 3g

I'm aware that turning off Edge from sbsettings prevents the iPhone from accessing the Internet, however, does turning off Edge from sbsettings also turn off 3G as far as power consumption is concerned or is it still consuming power and must also be turned off.

On my phone stopping EDGE with sbsettings stops 3G working so you mite as well just turn it off to be sure.

Default I'm only concerned with power

I understand that turning off Edge in sbsettings, turns off all Internet access through 3G, but does it also turn off 3G with respect to power consumption? I would hate to unnecessarily turn off the 3G icon also if I don't have to. Laziness I guess.
