Question Is it possible?: Jailbreak+unlocking iPhone 3G (iOS 4.2.1; BB 05.15.04) for Verizon

    Hello!

Sort of a quick question…so, I have an old iPhone 3G (model MB702LL) running on iOS 4.2.1, with baseband 05.15.04, that I used to use with AT&T. I’ve since switched to an iPhone 4, & this old iPhone’s been lying dormant for about a year…now, my boyfriend has a contract with Verizon, & his smartphone [Motorola Devour] is a piece of shit & I told him I’d give him my old iPhone 3G if I could figure out how to jailbreak [untethered] & unlock the damned thing…which is turning out to be more complicated than I’d anticipated.

Now, I’ve been trying to figure out how to do this properly without inadvertently upgrading the baseband or anything like that, but I’m sort of at a loss…I’m not sure what’s important to ensure is compatible when looking at redsn0w or pwnagetool or whatever releases.

I was sorta hoping somebody here could just point me in the direction of what to do in what order using which hacks. (I’d rather take somebody’s advice than screw something up that I couldn’t undo.)

    Would greatly appreciate any input!

You can only unlock that baseband by upgrading it to the 06.15 baseband (baseband for the iPhone). This is not recommended -- it impacts GPS connectivity, cannot be undone, voids your warranty, cannot be undone (yep, listing it twice, it's that important), prohibits you from successfully completing a normal restore, etc. The list goes on.

Unfortunately, you're in a bit of a pickle. If he doesn't care about losing GPS, you can use PwnageTool to upgrade to the 06.15 baseband, which can then be unlocked using ultrasn0w -- but do a lot of research first, there are a lot of issues that doing this creates and you (or him) will really need to know as much about it as you can.

Thank you very much for the reply! All considering, I think I should just focus on trying to salvage his current phone…tho’: where would you recommend I look in the future, if I ever wanted to see if the 06.15 baseband issues have been resolved?

ovidiu1305 caught me -- I missed that you mentioned that you were trying to make the 3G work on Verizon -- if that's the case, it's worth mention that the iPhone 3G/3GS/4 do NOT have the dual-mode baseband that the iPhone 4S has -- as such, it can ONLY be used to connect to cellular networks of the supported technology type. For the AT&T iPhone 3G/3GS/4, this is 3G/GSM/EDGE networks but for the Verizon iPhone 4, this is CDMA only. Beyond that, as CDMA ties the MEID back to a carrier database, there's little hope of a direct unlocking method to allow switching between Verizon and other CDMA carriers.

Unfortunately, it seems like there won't be a way for you to make the iPhone 3G work on Verizon's network.

I, too, have an old iPhone 3G (model MB702LL) running on iOS 4.2.1, with baseband 05.15.04, that my in-laws used with AT&T, and I would like to pair it with my wife's Verizon service. However, your WARNING response was from 3 years ago and I wonder if anything has changed along these lines. Should I trust these various services who claim my phone can be jailbreaked and unlocked? Your words seem to indicate otherwise.
Thanks, cause otherwise I am clueless.
