Question Possible to activate with AT&T without upgrading plans?

    Hi all,
Hopefully a simple question: can my mother-in-law go into AT&T, purchase a 16GB iPhone 3G for $299, extended her contract by two-years, and NOT change her voice-only plan?

Specifically, the phone would be for me (in anticipation of a dev-team unlock). She would continue using her simple phone that doesn't include text messaging or data. Would AT&T allow her to get the iPhone, then? or does the required activation process require upgrading her plan, too? Could she theoretically continue using her existing voice plan with no other upgrades?

    Thanks much!

    Simply no...

When you buy it you sign a new contract and that automatically adds the data plan. You can't have an iPhone without a data plan...

Default iPhone without a data plan...stupid question help.

I'm with AT&T. I was going to renew a new contract with them in order to get an iPhone at a discount. I understand that it automatically adds the data plan which is an extra charge every month. However, after a couple of months I thought I would take of the DATA plan & tell them I'm not using that phone. Does this TURBO/Stealth SIM take care of that? What exactly do those SIM cards do? Just unlock? I don't need to surf or get email. thanks in advance.

No on canceling the Data plan, they know what phone you're using by communication with the tower.

I'm not sure about the Sim solution, but you'll still need a Data plan of some type.

you can just swap phones remove the data plan, and plop the sim back in.

Until they contact you to give the iPhone back
And contact you a tell you they know your using an iPhone and they'll be adjusting your data plan accordingly

i've activated my iphone 3g (bought from ebay) using any at&t SIM card. it just says "phone is activated" and i swap out the SIM card.

my friends who have at&t told me their bills havent' changed because of it.
