Default please help - unknown bootloader version

Hi, a friend just brought home his 3g iphone. I dont know much about his phone and neither does he. All he know is that he was using TurboSim and was working perfectly until he accidentally updated to version 2.2.1. Now the thing is, the phone has no signal reception after update. Firmware on the phone is 02.30.03 and since it doesnt have Cydia installed I dont know how to check for bootloader version. Can somebody guide me through steps to work this out. Please? Ty.

The iPhone needs to be jailbroken first. Use Quickpwn for Mac or Windows. Dont worry about Modem Firmware, it's already at 02.30.03.

here is a tutorial on how to jailbreak and get Cydia on the iPhone:

When done, here is how to get info on the bootloader

    thanks,
tried it already, but the update stuck in the begging when itunes shows "preparing iphone for restore" and the device make a reset.
the error on itunes is 23.
tried in dfu mode, just the same (some times got errors 16xx)

any other idea how to manipulate baseband ?
