Default PLEASE HELP --- 3G update

    Hello, everyone

I'm sorry if this is not the right forum to post this (admins feel free to move the thread somewhere else if appropriate).

I have an iPhone 3G running on iOS 3.0. Baseband is 04.26.08 and Bootloader is 6.2 (info from f0recast).

It is jailbroken, and unlocked with ultrasn0w. I got the phone like that from a friend, I didn't jailbreak it myself.

I want to update the OS to a newer versions (the latest possible, actually), but I'm not sure how to do it without losing the jailbreak and unlock.

I've been asking around and the first thing I was told to do is save the SHSH in Cydia's servers (Cydia reports SHSH saved for 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, but I'm positive I have iOS 3.0; Cydia itself reports iOS 3.0 at the bottom), for which apparently I have to update the OS first to 3.1.2 using Restore from iTunes. (I have already downloaded 3.1.2 from Apple just in case, but I haven't used it). However, I don't know what happens after I update, I'm not sure how to jailbreak and unlock again.

And once I do that, how do I update again to keep the jailbreak and the unlock?

Sorry if this sounds too stupid, but I'm really afraid I will lose the phone if I do something wrong.

If someone could explain to me in detail what steps I should follow, I will be very grateful.

Pwnagetool 4.1 is the best choice for this. It is mac os x only. It will keep your baseband at 04.26.08 but update to iOS 4.1

The 3G performs poorly on iOS 4.0, 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 so you should avoid these.

Performance is slightly slower on iOS 4.1 compared to iOS 3.x - however if you use pwnagetool, you can always revert back to 3.x if you find the performance drop unacceptable.

No other solution offers you the ability to remain unlocked at the latest iOS version.

    Thank you, Olethros

I have a Windows PC, so I can't use PwnageTool.

I guess I should go with 3.1.3 then (I've read it is the most stable OS up to this date?).

If I do this, should I use a cooked firmware (using something similar to PwnageTool but for Windows) or should I update via iTunes and then jailbreak using something else?

You have four options: I only recommend two of them

    1. Borrow a mac and use pwnagetool
    2. Confirm you have a SHSH for 3.1.3 and use the "last ditch update" method http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:removellb to go to 3.1.3 without updating baseband.
    3. Use sn0wbreeze (windows unofficial pwnagetool clone) - NOT recommended.
    4. Download a pre-made custom IPSW from net and restore with iTunes - NOT recommended.

Pwnagetool and sn0wbreeze are not the same, even though to the average user they appear to do the same thing.

Pwnagetool is a complete product, designed to generate custom IPSW and also to trick iTunes and the iPhone into accepting such custom IPSW. The code required to do these tasks is built into the application.

Sn0wbreeze is a GUI on top of a command line tool developed by the iPhone dev team (same people who made pwnagetool). This makes it more "hacky" and means that the end product (custom IPSW) is not the same as that produced by PwnageTool.

This (in addition to many other reasons) is why we refuse to recommend or support sn0wbreeze on this forum.

Downloading any unofficial software from the internet is always a risk, it is not always what it promises to be. This is also true for custom IPSW made by someone else and uploaded to the internet. Firstly it is warez (unauthorised re-distribution of modified Apple code). Secondly it might say that it will NOT update your baseband (but actually does) or worse it could include malware.
