Hi Guys and Gals!

I need some help! I have the 2g iPhone unlocked and I’m using my o2 pay monthly SIM which has unlimited internet on it... all good.

However I want a new 3g iPhone! I have tried my SIM in a mates pay monthly 3g Phone and it works fine. My question is....

Will my normal o2 pay monthly SIM work in a 3g Pay-as-you-go iPhone too or are there different settings etc that might prevent this?
I don’t want to go out and spend £300+ and find can’t use my own SIM!

Any help would be muchos appreciated!

Should have mentioned that I am in the UK... think O2 is only UK anyway but thought I best clarrify!

Hi Jonny,
I was trying the same a few days ago but apparently no one has either tried this or people dont want to give this information.

I checked with carphone warehouse and o2 and each of them said that it wouldnt work.

Said the above, knowing about mobiles myself as I have been working and developing blackberry os, i know this is not impossible as you are still on the official carrier, even though O2 and carphone warehouse claim you will need a special pay as you go sim as opposed to your existing pay as you go sim even!

I took the investigation further, by calling my friend in Apple development team but he was away [untill end of Oct]. I had to fall back on my mac genius friend who works for Apple in Oxford Street and he said he cant see it not working either....But..... I didnt try it.... I am waiting for my friend in Apple dev to come back from states and then I am gonna buy one.... In the meantime let me know if you try and it works!

Hiya, I can answer this, and the answer is yes... as long as your old O2 sim is a 3G one- if it's not you can always "lose" it, and O2 will send you a new one.

Bottom line is that any O2 sim will "work" in a 3G iPhone PAYG, but with the following caveats:

- If you don't have a 3G sim (this doesn't mean a 3G contract or anything, just that the newer SIM cards have slightly different electronics than the older ones), you may not get connected. Basically if your SIM is less than 3 years old, you'll be golden
- You may need to change the EDGE/GPRS settings on the iPhone to get data
- Visual voicemail will not work unless you have an iPhone account with O2 (and the 2G account is fine for this)

I've tried a PAYG phone with a non iPhone O2 SIM, and it works fine. Also tried a standard PAYG O2 SIM in both PAYG and contract iPhone 3Gs and these are also fine. The phone does not "know" whether the contract and SIM is an iPhone one; as long as the MCN/MNN codes match the phone's requirements, it'll work. Off topic, but spoofing these codes is the way the *SIM solutions (don't often) work

i always use an payg O2 sim whenever im in London ( unlocked phone)
The only thing that doesnt work is visual voicemail on my 3G

it pretty much will work if it supports 3G networking,all you need to do is put it in the SIM slot and voila lol,if not make a new 3G supporting SIM with the same number and there you have your iPhone 3G working with the number that you desire...i wish i helped...(btw i think you should get it from eBay in dollars...much cheaper,and some are brand new)

Just wanted to reply to this thread to confirm that I've purchased a pay as you go iPhone 3GS from the UK apple store and it worked fine straight out the box on my monthly 02 simplicity SIM (£20/month) with unlimited data.

Also enabled internet tethering via http://help.benm.at/ without any issues.

I have an O2 Simplicity SIM, the 20 GBP a month one.

I just had to enter new APN settings on the phone to enable the internet and that was it, had it for about a month now an all is ok!

The APN settings for O2 Simplicity are as follows :

APN - mobile.o2.co.uk
User - faster
Pass - web
