I have the iphone 3g 16gb with baseband 5.12.01 and firmware 3.1.3 and i want to update to 4.2.1 or 4.1 and when i try to i get this message 'iphone not eligible for request build' or something like that, i want to do this without jailbreaking it because i already have in the past and i dont want to anymore

PLEASE !!!!

Have you run TinyUmbrella in the past?
If so, run it again - go to advanced tab, uncheck "set hosts to cydia on exit" click apply and close TinyUmbrella.
Then try again (4.2.1 should work after this procedure)

NOTE: this will upgrade your baseband to a version that can't easily be unlocked.

You need to use jailbreak techniques to load 4.1
