I recently obtained an iphone 3g from my sister, restored it, and then went to unlock it. I got the 4.1 ipsw and successfully unlocked the phone! Cydia is installed and updated but the phone keeps saying NO SERVICE! Is there any way to get service? I have a T-Mobile sim card.

Which T-Mobile? USA? UK? You need to specify more details.

I was using software version 4.1, I'm going to try downgrading to 3.1.2 and jailbreaking from there.

If you restored or upgraded to 4.1 without using pwnagetool. Then you very likely cannot unlock at the moment. The warnings were clear. Ultrasn0w does not support the baseband upgrade that ships with 4.1 (or 4.2 for that matter) and you needed to wait until tools were available to prevent baseband upgrade when loading 4.1

Pwnagetool 4.1.x came out about a week ago and (as always) is mac only. It is the only way to prevent losing the ability to unlock on a 3G or 3GS.

Downgrading to 3.1.x will NOT downgrade baseband.

As you have a 3G, you could try fuzzyband from cydia (it works for less than 1% of 3G iPhones). Otherwise, wait... for new ultrasn0w unlock (due soon)
