Newbie needs help to downgrade from 4.0 to 3.1.3
I am a newbie to the iphone world as I just received a hand-me-down 3G to use. The previous owner did say the os was updated to 4.0 and the performance was affected as a result. Before I started using the phone I thought it would be a good idea to try to downgrade the os. I found many of the guides posted on the internet.
1) I was able to put the phone in DFU mode (black screen and all) and have itunes recognize it.
2) I downloaded the .ipsw 3.1.3 file and restored the firmware using itunes. The process took approx 10 min. and at the end of the process I received error 10 - unable to restore iphone...
3) Using windows xp, I downloaded recboot v1.2. When I run the program and press exit recovery mode, the window says "your phone is being kicked out of recovery mode". I waited several minutes and nothing happened.
4) I next tried using the irecovery tool. In the command prompt I followed the instructions and entered the proper commands. the phone will reboot per the command but when it does it reboots to recovery mode (usb plug and itunes icons on the iphone screen).
Im stuck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Don't think i've seen error 10 before - it's likely related to USB bus instability during the restore.
Post your restore log http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm to be sure.
Try a different machine, USB port, USB cable and all the troubleshooting steps outlined in the Apple link that I included in that thread.

Thanks for the response. Followed your advice and apparently my 10 year old laptop only has 1.0 usb ports which failed the restore process (error 10). Used the home computer and the process worked no problem.
