my brother went to The bestbuy store asked about buying an iphone..
he asked if cancel the contract after 30 days, what would happen..
the seller said we need to return the iphone if we cancel the contract in 2 years....
And pay the fee ..otherwise they would not cancel the ATT account..

No, returning the iPhone just applies for the first month.
Starting from month 2, you just have to pay the ETF and that's it.

However, I heard some stories where they didn't have to return the
phone in the first month.

Recommendation, go ahead and try canceling before 30 days.

I have the same question, just bought myself an iphone and they said that I have to return the phone back, but they seem like they don't know what' they're talking about. so I was wondering what will happen if we don't return the phone?

You will pay the ETF, the system in place to compensate the phone company for the subsidized price of the phone when not continuing the contract. That's it, they aren't going to make exceptions for the iphone. It's your device after paying the ETF.
