Default Need help activating an unlocking iPhone 3G

I used to have a first gen iPhone. I had purchased it unlocked, but shortly after buying had to re-unlock it using winpwn. The process was easy enough, but I never had to activate it.

I now have an iPhone 3G, and am a bit confused. I guess I need to create an ipsw file, but winpwn won't let me get far enough into the process to create one without already having one. iTunes doesn't like the fact that my sim card is not an offical carrier.

I have ordered a turbo-sim, but I don't expect it for several days, and I would like to get the phone working now, if possible.

Is QuickPwn the program I need to use to create an ispw? I'm using a Windows based pc. I read the warning that using QuickPwn will prevent you from using Yellowsn0w in the future, but I'm not even sure what Yellowsn0w is.

Some guidance would be greatly appreciated. Is there anyway I could brick this thing if I do this wrong?

I downloaded and began to use QuickPwn, but it seems to require that I already have an IPSW file as well.

Follow the instructions here iClarified - iPhone - How to Unlock the iPhone 3G. Make sure you DO NOT upgrade to 2.2.1 as this will mean your phone cannot be unlocked. 2.2 is the firmware you want to be on (because it is the one with 2.28.00 baseband) to use yellowsnow which is what unlocks the phone.

Thanks, this will make the unlocking process much easier. A couple of questions though:

    - How do I know my iPhone didn't come with 2.2.1 already installed? If it did, am I just s.o.l.?

    - This says that my phone must be jailbroken first. I still don't know how to do that without the IPSW file.

I just realized I put this thread in the wrong forum. Sorry about that.

    Default Jailbreaking question

I just purchased a new iPhone 3G from eBay. I don't have a sim card for an authorized carrier, so iTunes won't let me restore. Will a turbo-sim fix this problem, so that I can jailbreak the phone?

Once you jailbreak it you go to settings and about to check the firmware and modem firmware (baseband). If it came with 2.2.1 already installed then your only hope of unlocking is a turbosim (which are very unreliable). The ipsw you need is just the regular 2.2 for 3g iphones and can be downloaded from that site I linked you to. Just follow the instructions to put 2.2 on your phone first and hope you get no errors (an error will occur if your iphone has 2.2.1 on it because itunes cannot downgrade your baseband to that of a 2.2 iphone). If you get no errors then you should be good to go with the jailbreaking part.

You have to put your phone into dfu mode to restore. Basically just hold the home and power button (top right button) for exactly ten seconds. At the end of ten seconds let go of the power button whilst still holding the home button until itunes recognizes your iphone and tells you it is in recovery. At that point hold shift key on your keyboard and click restore then choose the 2.2 firmware for the iphone 3g. After that follow the tutorial on iclarified for jailbreaking and unlocking.

Problem. I started the restore process using iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw, and about 3/4's of the way through the process, I got this message: "The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1013)".

Now the emergency calls bar is gone from the screen. It is just the picture of the usb cable pointing towards iTunes.

Please tell me this thing isn't completely fubr'd.

Remember what I said earlier about if you get the error then it is probably because you had 2.2.1 already on your iphone and so have the 2.2.1 baseband. iTunes cannot downgrade your baseband and so you get the error near the end of the restore. Sorry to tell you but it looks like you wont be able to unlock yet. Just to be sure use quickpwn and it should kick it out of recovery (or tell you how) and then jailbreak and activate. Once you have access again go to the settings and then general then the about tab and see what your modem firmware is at the bottom. I am guessing it is 2.30.00 which means a turbosim is your only chance of using it (and at this point they are not very good).
