Default Need to downgrade iPhone 3G iOS to 4.1?

There's so many jailbreaks and unlock method i'm not even sure which one is up to date that works and is reliable for iPhone 3G iOS 3.1.2 or probably 4.1? It's at 4.2.1 at the moment. Can anyone guide me what the best method for this jailbreak & unlock version. Before I was using blackrain & blacksn0w. Also, what are the steps to start downgrading? I have my 4.1, 4.0 shsh save on cydia. Not sure how to retrieve it to downgrade?

What baseband and baseband bootloader do you currently have? TinyUmbrella will give you this information (even if you are stuck at the slide for emergency screen)

Did you use custom IPSW to go to iOS 4.2.1?
Why do you want iOS 4.1? If you have not "blocked baseband update" via custom IPSW, downgrading to 4.1 (even with saved SHSH) won't downgrade your baseband.

Also, forget blackra1n/blacksn0w - they were one of the buggiest and problematic jailbreak/unlocks ever released.

Oh, sorry I don't have BL 5.8 (I wish lol) my BL is 5.9 MB model. When I upgrade to 4.2.1 I use custom ipsw to retain my baseband so it still sit at 05:11:07. The reason I want to downgrade to 4.1 is to try it out but main important part is some of the apps I used don't support 4.2.1 hence, I need to downgrade to 4.1. I have my shsh save for 4.1. What would be the best steps to downgrade and jailbreak to 4.1 while still keeping my baseband so I can unlock. I don't want to resort to iPad baseband. Step by step is very appreciated thanks.

Use Pwnagetool 4.1.2 to make a custom ipsw plus TinyUmbrella to retrieve your saved SHSH

I don't have a Mac and I did have my shsh save on my computer from TU. How do I start this process? Do I open TU and start TSS server then open redsnow and point to 4.1 firmware? I'm not sure how to start please give step by step.

You must use custom IPSW (and start with phone in pwned dfu mode)

There are other tools to make custom ipsw but We recommend only pwnagetool
