well, i posted in a different area that my 2Gs screen cracked. so m thinking its an opportunity to get a 3G. Im an ATT legit guy but im not so keen on switching to the 3G plan. its 30$ and doesn't include texting to my knowledge while the 2G plan comes with 250 texts included...

is this true?an someone shed light on the 2\3G data plans??

also, what is the deal (if any) about old iphone users wanting to upgrade?) do we need more contract time? cheaper plans? discounts? itunes giftcard??? anything?

finally, if i decide to go rouge and buy the phone without activating, (is that possible??) and just slide my ATT SIM inside. will it work or does it need to be unlocked to get a ATT iphone 2G sim to work??

I was in same situation as you, I dropped my 16GB and I crack my screen..
I know Apple would charge me $249 to replace and with 3G around a corner I decided to wait.
Then on a picnic somewhere I meet someone that works in Apple store and I told him about my situation.
He advises me to get 3G and sell 16G old one on ebay.
One day after lunch I decided to get 3G and just in a case took my old 16GB with me..
Got my 3G and told sales person about my 16GB, she called a guy from genius bar and he looked my iPhone and ask what happened?
I told him that I dropped my phone on asphalt and screen broke. He took phone with him and after minute or so he comes out with white box.
Started tipping on his laptop, than got couple papers of the printer and came over to me.
At that moment I took my credit card out and he sad “there is charge $249 for replacement, but since you didn’t try to bullshit me I am not going to charge you.. “
I LOVE APPLE STORE….
Got home just to realize I can get 3G service at my house and since I work from home that is where I spend most of the time with my phone.
So someone posted something about changing back to old plan and that’s exactly what I did took my new Sim from 3G put it in 16GB old phone, restored activated and than changed my plan all from ITunes.
Not a perfect solution but better than paying ATT for service that I don’t have and in a future if 3G becomes available I just flip a switch and sigh up for new plan.

if so, he also let you take home the old iphone? so now you have 2?
and also, what did you do to the 3g? put ur old sim inside it? did u activate a new plan?

No, I think what he did was got the 3G and the plan, and then reverted back to the original iphone plan. What I would do is call att, and ask them if you buy an iphone 3g, when can you cancel that contract and revert to your original one, how much would it cost, or see if you can just cancel the 30 dollar 3g plan.

Or you can just explain the situation to them and see if they are nice enough to help you out. Might take multiple people to find the nice one.

I went to store to get 3G phone and had older 2G with me.
Seles person upgraded me to 3G with new plan.
(Now my decision to upgrade was based on assumption that I have to pay $249 to fix my old phone)
Than I ask about my 2G broken screen, and got replacement for free
Got home realized I can’ get 3G service (AT&T map shows I should have service)
Took the SIM card from 3G and put it in 2G that I just got replaced, Activation screen shows up
went true activation process in ITunes changed plan and activated old 2G phone.
Took new SIM from 2G phone that I just activated and put it back in 3G phone.
Now I have 3G phone with old data plan ( Data+200 SMS for $20)
My discount alone would cover extra charge for 3G plan but what is the point since I don’t have covrage.

Now I should mention that my first IPhone 2G died week after I got it in AT&T store last year.
Apple store customer service experience was so positive that since than I have got:
IMac 24 inch, MacBook Pro 17 inch, Apple Airport Extreme, Apple TV, IPhone 3G
Now I use Mac 70% off time
