Read the instructions for redsn0w beta. You need to point redsn0w at the 4.0 IPSW - not the 4.0.1 or 4.0.2 IPSW
If you downloaded redsn0w from another site than redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team] then you should re-download it to be sure you have the latest version.

Ok in all the tutorials i'm told to "download latest redsn0w" "download 4.0.1 firmware" "download 4.0.0 ipsw restore. I've done everything the tutorials & you guys have told me to do, now here's where it all falls apart. My phone will only restore to 4.0.1 firmware, that's fine, now the only ipsw restore redsn0w will recognize is 3.1.2 but only if i use redsn0w 9.4 not 9.5. So it goes through all the right moves but when it's finnished downloading jailbreak data it reverts back to emergency call screen.Have i got you thinking yet?

I've tried pointing redsn0w at 4.0 ipsw but it does not recognize it,the only ipsw redsn0w will recognize is 3.1.2. over the last two days i've tried every combination 100 times & the only ones that give me any results are 4.0.1 firmware & 3.1.2 ipsw. no other combination gets me out of recovery mode. trust me i can get to the stage of downloading jailbreak data but when that finnishes i'm back in emergency call screen???

You are using the latest redsn0w beta 0.9.5b5?
Also there are two 4.0 versions floating about. 4.0GM and 4.0 they have same version number but only 4.0 can be downloaded publicly from Apple - which is where you should always get your IPSW - any other source is always suspect.

I just downloaded the 3G IPSW - from http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite....3_Restore.ipsw and redsn0w 0.9.5 b5 that is linked at the bottom of redsn0w 0.9.5 BETA [iPhone Dev Team]
redsn0w could recognise the 4.0 IPSW.
You must have a corrupted download or downloaded redsn0w from somewhere else.
redsn0w 0.9.4 will not work for iOS 4.0

Use pwnagetool/custom IPSW for 4.0.1 or 4.0 - Apple has added a soft-shsh requirement for 3G on iOS 4.0 and higher - so they can block you restoring or upgrading stock 4.0 and 4.0.1
If that doesn't work - post your restore log. See http://www.hackint0sh.org/f137/130802.htm for instructions.
