My iPhone 3G is SMASHED !!!
Well I had my shiny new unlocked white iPhone 3G for 1 week and it slipped out of my hand, hit the ground and smashed the screen...
So I ordered a replacement glass and digitiser from Hong Kong. It arrived today.
I opened the iPhone and then separated the LCD panel from the screen.
Then I had to somehow separate the glass from the frame...not pleasant as its glued on.
Put the new glass lens on, re-assembled and ....powered on....and....LCD is damaged.
So the LCD now displays something that resembles abstract art...no good.
Moral of the story: if you have a broken glass, you need to buy the screen, digitiser and LCD panel as one unit.
DO NOT TRY TO REPLACE ONLY THE GLASS. Its glued on...
Apple official price is 250 USD but pdaparts.com have the whole unit for 189 USD.
Only problem !!! None in stock !!
So my iPhone is in bits in the box waiting for the day the spares become available...
HOW VERY VERY ANNOYING !!!!!!!!!!!!

I had dropped my iPhone 2G from my pocket onto a very uneven surface on the road quite some time back.
I picked it up fearing the worst...
It totally ripped my screenguard but the screen was scratchless.
I really feel for you man, bad luck.

I have dropped my 2G iPhone more then a few times. It only got scratches, nothing severe. I hope I do not drop my white 3G, It seems they are more prone to damages. I feel for you man, Hoping things work out for ya.

Just to clear this up, the front screen glass and digitiser ARE glued together. The LCD is seprate and NOT glued to the digitiser. If you have smashed the front screen, try replacing that first before buying the LCD part. This is for 3G iPhone only, the 2G is well glued together and you must replace the whole thing in one go.

Yes, and No. I had to have my 2G screen replaced, and the person doing it simply heated up a long blade and put it between the glass and the LCD, and the two came right apart! Nice

I repaired only the glass of my 2G.
