If you can't wait for 2.0 software on 11 July (next Friday) then buy a 3G iPhone so you can play with it until it is working on existing phones in a jailbreaked/unlocked configuration!
(I know my plan involves buying a new iPhone but I will be and its the safest solution! and you can always return it!)
iPhone US 8GB
FW 1.0.2--> iUnlock--> iPhoneSIMfree--> 1.1.1 --> 1.1.2--> Soft upgrade 1.1.3 --> 1.1.4 using signal.app
iPhone UK 16GB
FW 1.1.3 OOB --> 1.1.4 --> iPlus 1.2 unlocked!
<----If I helped you out, rep points are always nice (thanks for that idea!)

2.0 is around the corner. As your heart pounds faster, for some anyways, and as you get more excited with the new features coming, like MMS or the iTunes Control, be patient and dont upgrade.
MMS? When/how/where was that ever mentioned to be in 2.0?

Unlock iPhone to Verizon?
http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com/
"I'm curious as to what amplifier chip the phone uses though. The number one question I got from people about the old iPhone unlock is "Will it work with Verizon?" Now it could be possible." George Hotz

Cost of 8gb 3G iphone in Canada
It will cost you $793.19 to get 8gb 3G iphone, if you sign $60 plan with rogers or fido and cancel it after one month. I dont think 3G is worth this price.

iPhone [1.0.2 OTB]Unlocked -->1.1.3 ziphone -->1.1.4 iLiberty -->1.1.4 WinPwn 1.0 -->2.0 WinPwn 2.0 --> WinPwn 2.2 --> Yellowsn0w 2.2

iPhone is the best cellphone I ever used

phone 3g sucks i wont sell my old iphone and buy the new one twice expensive just for 3g and gps
gps i have gps no need for it and even if i need it i wont pay 600$ for it and the 3g i have my wifi
they should put new features like camera 5mp or cam in front of the mobile the 3g has no use if u have wifi and the battery of the new one sucks
stick with the 2g no need for 3g
who will probably buy the new one is just to show off on his friends

I respectfully disagree. With the subsidy the 3g is affordable in many countries, more so than the 2g version. It will get people who never had an iPhone before to go buy one and join the legion of mobile Internet users.

There is no doubt that NEW buyers get a reasonable deal on the 3G.
I dont see much point in any existing owner upgrading. You get most of the benefit from just the firmware upgrade.
O2 cap the data rates here in the UK anyway, so not much speed (if any) increase. I never use GPS, and the phone locating on 2g version is fine anyway.
If people go rushing off to dump the old one and get a new one they are obviously more taken with hype than any real need for the phone.

I love my current iphone but I have considered upgrading simply because in the time that I have had my phone I was dumb and left it unprotected and now it has scratches all over so I wan't something new that I can put a cover on and keep shiny!
