sarcastro I had this happen to me this morning. I was starting to go nuts and thought I'd stuffed it completely. 1604 errors constantly. Changing USB ports did nothing (I can't see why that would fix the problem anyway), and re-installing iTunes did nothing either.
Originally I had tried putting into DFU mode as suggested by John Gregorio. That was close, but not exactly what fixed it. Try this...
- Remove the cable from your phone (very important it's not connected to your PC/Mac)
- Hold your home and power button down together for around 10 seconds to reset it
- You will then see the Apple logo (hopefully). Then plug into your computer and iTunes should detect it.
- Restore now and it should be ok
I tried everything to get this to work, but only in this exact sequence could I get it back. Before nothing would happen - black screen and no response to anything I tried. But I hope this helps you??

Hey, I was just as fustrated as you. This is what I did to get it working again:
1. Install vmware fusion or whatever
2. Create a new image, install xp
3. install itunes 8.0, get a ipsw package... shift-click on restore
select the file... ding!

Just send it to me. I'll trade you another one. Set up a transaction on ebay.

Same problem iphone wont boot and itunes wont restore
I have a 3g and had the same problem after trying to install something from Sydia. No matter what itunes would not restore and give me an error. Then the iphone screen would go black and I would have to hold the home and top button for the phone to come back on but it would still show only just the apple logo.
I tried to reinstall like 12 times then one timeout of nowhere, not sure If it was a different sequence of holding down the buttons or some just some random thing but instead of showing the apple logo I got a screen showing the iphone cord and the itunes logo. Then I tried to restore again and it worked. My suggestion would be to just keep trying to restore putting your phone in DFU mode. I know it sounds stupid but that's what worked on my phone.
Good luck!!!

Senior Professional
Array
search *.ipsw files on your comp.
there should only official ipsw firmware files ~250MB in size
if you find some smaller ipsw file like *recover*.ipsw
delete that
then usual stuff, reboot pc , restore from itunes running as admin, different usb port, repair itunes installation etc.

Make sure your iPhone is connected to your computer.
Next, Hold the power and sleep buttons until it shuts off.
Release them, then hold down the power and sleep for 10 seconds, count, 1.2.3.4.5.6.7.8.9, and release the power button.
KEEP HOLDING THE HOME BUTTON
Your screen should not turn on, and after awhile, you should hear your PC ding, as it detects the phone.
Your phone is now in DFU mode, go and head and restore!
Thank you dude. this worked for me. so far anyways.. its restoring as i type
