About LinkBacksrecently changed to ios4 but my 16gb is now showing 6.9gb with with other 187.6mb, can anyone tell me where the other gb went, i have cleared mem and restored again but same thing...can anyone help please?

Did you restore from a backup? Normally this can cause this problem, try to restore without backup and take a look at How To Upgrade In iTunes | iPhone News, Help and Guides
