Default iphone in DFU mode, no internet connection. Possible to restore?

I think my last post was perhaps a bit too convoluted, so I'm going to ask the main question here, in the hope that I can figure out the rest of it myself.

The only machine that I have or have access to that can run itunes is physically broken and cannot be connected to the internet.

I need to restore my iphone 3G in DFU mode, and I have the ispw file on the computer.
When I connect my phone in DFU mode, I get an error message telling me that itunes couldn't connect to the server because it is not connected to the internet.
When I close the message, my iphone is not showing up in itunes, so I can't access it to restore it.

Is there any way to get itunes to recognize an iphone in DFU mode without first contacting the server?

You should still be able to shift-restore an iOS 3.x IPSW to the device without internet connectivity. iOS 4.0+ requires SHSH which requires internet connectivity in order to obtain authorization from Apple to restore the firmware but 3.x should not.

    iPhone 4, 32GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n | SHSH: 4.0 - 6.1.2)
    iPad 2 3G, 64GB (iOS 6.1.2 | evasi0n
    |
    SHSH: 4.3 & 4.3.3 - 6.1)

Thanks for your reply, I just thought I'd post an update here in case it might help someone else in the future.
You do need an internet connection.
This doesn't appear to have anything to do with shsh blobs, it just happens as soon as you connect an iphone in DFU mode (or put an already-connected iphone into DFU mode).
As soon as you connect, it throws up a dialog box informing you that itunes could not contact the server, and the phone does not show up in the sidebar, so a restore isn't possible.
If you do have an internet connection, you probably wouldn't even be aware that this happens, because it just appears to recognize the phone without fanfare.

I managed to jury rig the ethernet port on my laptop with some microsurgery, and the repair lasted long enough to get past this problem and restore my phone.

Glad to hear you got it going -- I guess they added the internet requirement in either iOS 4.0+ or the new iTunes -- I'm certain you didn't need internet connectivity back in iOS 3.x days. In any case, very glad to hear you were able to rig it and get it going!

I don't think it has anything to do with ios 4, because the phone was in DFU mode, so the currently installed OS should have been a non issue.
The OS I installed was 3.1.2 (the original one that came with the phone), but that doesn't make a difference either, as the problem happened as soon as the USB cable was connected.

My guess is that either you are correct in thinking that this only happens with newer versions of itunes, or simply that you didn't notice.
If you are connected to the internet, then you wouldn't even be aware that this was happening.

Either way it doesn't matter. The phone is now working just as it did the day I got it. I found older versions of the apps that no longer support 3x and I'm happy.
The only two slight inconveniences are that I can no longer transfer ebooks into stanza via itunes, and I no longer have folders.
These two slight niggles are nothing compared with how slow my phone was running before the 'downgrade'.
