Tom Tom is already on the record saying that they have their navigation software already running on the new iPhone. Who ever makes the first 3D navigation software like you see on GPS units will make the biggest killing. I would think apple would want more that 30% of that so I would think apple would be more involved in this peace of software…

What Tom Tom seems to think is that apple is going to go with an American company with this one and not a company from Europe.

I did this today..i drove around with tracking on through Google maps....the GPS works amazingly well already on the iPhone 3G, so well in-fact...I am not sure what you mean by updating..but it was updating my position on the map very very well...extremely accurate...

As it stands, without any 3d nav software for the iphone, what is provided as is, is pretty good...

Unhappy Still waiting to be connected...

I pre-ordered on Thursday, my phone was delivered to CPW on Friday, collected Saturday morning and activated a few hours later. However, I'm still waiting for O2 to activate my number as it still not recognised. I read somewhere that all sims should be activated by midnight tonight. Is anyone else who has a phone still in the same situation? Other than that, the phone is better than the first one.

My first impressions are great, have a few issues however. Been using it since 9am Friday morning on Upgrade, in Uk on 02.

    1) Keyboard seems a bit buggy with the suretype thing, maybe the dictionary is learning my style/words now? Unsure on this....But not as smooth as my 1.1.4 Iphone at all

2)Seems a little buggy on safari, have had a few pages crash and return me to the home screen while using both 3G and Wifi, and then today on Edge.

3)Low signal strength, showing one bar in areas where my previous Iphone shows full....for example in my study. Could this be a sim contact issue perhaps? Not sure...

4)Camera is very poor in sunlight, worse than before. Could this be because of that so called coating on the last one which you can remove with alcohol wipes? Not sure, but some bright shots in a park came out with terrible exposure, even with the sun behind me. Thoughts anyone?

5)Battery does seem as poor as the last one....

6)I saw some sod with a white one making a call in John Lewis in bluewater this afternoon! LOL He saw me holding mine and looked down on my like I was a pauper

    On the positive side though:-

    1) My mobile me is now spot on following the update on my mac of the OSX part today. I'm pushing everything fine and its lightening fast!

    2) GPS tracking is superb! I was driving around Kent today and my Tom Tom through a complete wobbly on sections of the new M20. I fired up old faithful and Google Maps and my iphone tracked me all the way back to the house I was at near Brands Hatch on all the roads keeping pace with me the whole time, even down dodgy back lanes. I also notice how this works without having to have direct sight of the sky like a tom tom. This was working simply on my lap if you like....The only slight negative is this seemed to use a fair bit of battery up-about 4/5ths in 15 mins

3)It feels nicer, and I have just bought the Belkin Clear case for it this morning as a result of being worried about stratches. Downside is Apple Stores possible options for cases are limited, but enough to protect it until you get the one you want in the coming weeks...as they hit the stores

4)Sound is definately better through the speakers, and I think its slightly better through the headphones as well.

All in all, after the drama's of locating one last week for launch I would give it 9/10

Oh, and if your still after one...Apple store in Bluewater had a few 8Gb blacks still in stock at 3pm today (Sunday)

    1) email functionality sucks ass when you don't have signal / not connected to the internet. so for e.g. if you're in an airplane, in the underground, traveling etc it absolutely sucks. here, comparison:
tytn on WM6: you do all sorts of stuff, trash messages, reply etc etc when you're offline. when it detects a signal it does everything you wanted it to, sends off email, trashes etc.
iphone: i delete a message. it undeletes it, puts an alert box "sorry cannot delete email." ok, no big deal, i'll leave it in my inbox. i compose a message, write it, hit send. alert box "sorry could not send email." at which point the email stays in the outbox. when i finally get back to signal area does it automatically do everything? nope. i need to sit there, delete messages while online, and click on the bottom where it says "1 unsent message" for it to get sent off, otherwise it'll just sit in the outbox.

c'mon apple. be reasonable. think of offline access.

    2) notes do not sync with outlook. i have a bunch of notes in my outlook, they're nowhere to be found on the iphone. when i write a note on the iphone, it should sync with my pc, but i can't access these notes on my pc, as far as i can see

    3) a number of my contacts in my outlook address book have extra notes / extra fields in them. my WM6 device shows all the info happily. iphone doesn't. only shows primary address, phone. there's a notes field but it doesn't match with the outlook notes field. it's just local to the iphone apparently.

    4) in my WM6 device i get an email, someone has written down a phone number. i can click on the phone number and get a menu which allows me to send SMS, email, MMS etc. so i can sms it. on iphone, when i click the number it wants to call it, that's it. no other options. and of course iphone has no copy paste functionality so i need to bring out pen and paper and write it down, or memorize the phone number. nice.

    5) no option to handwrite notes in iphone. WM6 i can just flip open notepad, doodle on it with my stylus, write down a shopping list etc. fast, easy, simple, syncs up with outlook.
in iphone i bring up notes and the keyboard comes up. ok what if i want to draw something? sure, ok, i could go to the app store and download an app that probably allows handwriting too but shouldn't this just be something built in? i mean what the hell is the point of a touch screen if you can't touch it to write notes?

    6) can't see upcoming events on homepage, or a week view in calendar which is annoying as hell. i don't want to just see whats planned for me today. what if its someone's bday tomorrow? my WM6 device would tell me tomorrow: x and y's bday and you have a meeting a 3pm tomorrow. in iphone i need to switch to the next day, day after, day after to see my "agenda for the week."

Thanks for your review. I agree there are many things iPhone does not do well yet. I have some comments on your issues, examples of workarounds I use.. maybe they will help a little

    1) email functionality sucks ass when you don't have signal...when i finally get back to signal area does it automatically do everything? nope.

I have 1.1.4 iPhone on Tmobile. My outbox sends itself when it finds reception, but not immediately.. sometimes it waits till it finds wifi, instead of edge

    2) notes do not sync with outlook.

notes do not sync on 1.1.4, so I dont use them. Instead I use the calendar, and type my notes there.

    3) a number of my contacts in my outlook address book have extra notes

have you tried the other way around?
put a note into an iPhone contact, then sync to Outlook, does the note show up somewhere?

on my mac, my iPhone contact notes DO show up in iCal

    4) in my WM6 device i get an email, someone has written down a phone number. i can click on the phone number and get a menu which allows me to send SMS, email, MMS etc. so i can sms it. on iphone, when i click the number it wants to call it, that's it.

    true for me too
    here is my workaround
I touch the button to call the number and then I immediately end the call
now the number is in my recent calls list, so I touch the blue arrow and
VIOLA! there is a button to text message that number..
you can also save the number as a contact, and in the future, you can text to that contact

    5) no option to handwrite notes in iphone.

    true
my trick is I handwrite my grocery list on paper, then take a photo of it with iPhone
silly, but, I get to play with my phone

    6) can't see upcoming events on homepage, or a week view in calendar

true, but from month view you can touch any day with a dot on it and find out whats on calendar

or, you can view the calendar as a list, and see everything, for any day

I have a t-mo wing and WM6 is not as good as iphone os. my biggest complaint is the speed. IDK if its just b/c the wing is a slow computer but damn it can get slow... always sluggish.

Does 3G have to be switched on for the new GPS to work?

How does the GPS work - it doesnt use cell towers right?

Also for us non 3G network people (aint available in my country) we must still buy a 3G model if we require a new iPhone hence my question on battery life

If the 3G is switched to off in the settings is the battery life better then gen 1 battery life?

The reason I ask all this is that I have a 16GB 1st Gen iphone and bought a second one which didnt arrive and was stolen in the post hence the seller is now sending me a 16GB 3G therefore I guess the 3G is prob teh best to keep!
