Discuss [iPhone 3G] US (AT&T) Pricing Plans released at the iPhone 3G - Hackint0sh.org; I called T-Mobile (USA) today and asked would the iPhone 3G work with their GPRS ...

Fwiw...
I called T-Mobile (USA) today and asked would the iPhone 3G work with their GPRS network. They said their existing 3G phones (3 models:1 Samsung, 2 Nokias)) work on their GPRS network (lil slower than 3G). And that NY and LA already have 3G and the rest of California (specifically San Diego) should have it by the end of the year.
I asked how much were 3G plans and they (she) said the same as their GPRS/EDGE plans. The sales rep did not know, but expected the iPhone 3G would work on their GPRS network, and their soon to be 3G network too. Also said T-Mobile Germany is the same company but that they work totally independent of each other; so no guarantee that visual voicemail would work...
Might I note, their customer service is so polite it's ridiculous; so willing to answer all of my questions and did not lie and say it definitely would work.
BTW, I'm a proud T-Mobile customer and iPhone (EDGE) user.

I don't know about 3G speeds in the USA, but overhere in Europe GPRS is a lot slower than HSDPA. For Example in Holland: GPRS: 64Kilobits per second, HSDPA, 2 megabits a second on T-Mobile (Iphone subscription) and 3.6Megabits on Vodafone. The protocol can carry up to 7.2 Megabits/sec.
It's like comparing ISDN vs DSL .

I am also a Tmobile customer and am very happy with their plans and rates. Trust me you cant get as much for so little dime in any other network..
Point being, the phone will work just fine, especially in the regions with 3G, but when no 3G available, EDGE, when no EDGE available, GPRS.

I thought it was a question of supported bands. With tmobile's 3G operating on different bands than ATT. Is that incorrect?

Good point. Not sure on that perspective. Check what bands the 3g iphone supports..

Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.
Will this be available for international users too? I mean, Could my friend go to New York buy me one and bring it to me in Cro, and I can put any SIM inside?
EDIT I found my answer
So what’s the deal with that no-commitment option for the iPhone? It’s not an unlocked iPhone, is it?
Indeed not. The “no-commitment option” that AT&T is providing, whereby you pay $599 for the 8GB iPhone 3G or $699 for the 16GB iPhone 3G, basically allows you to snag an iPhone without the 24-month contract. But you’re still pretty much tied into getting an AT&T plan if you want to use it as a phone; you won’t just be able to pop in a T-Mobile SIM card. However, should you wish to cancel that AT&T plan, you will not have to pay an early termination fee, since you have no contract.
