    Question [iPhone 3G]US phone work on o2?

    Hi,

    Does anybody know if a jailbroken 3G iphone bought on ebay from the US would work in the UK with any o2 sim cards like the original ones did, not just the iPhone contract ones?

    When jailbroken, the original iPhone let me use any o2 sims, like pay as you go ones, though this was on a UK phone.

    You could never use a US phone in the UK unless you unlocked it.

    Do NOT buy a US phone as it will not work until there is an unlock.

    You have 2 options, either sign up for a contract here in the UK at o2 etc,

    or pay 4 times the amount and get an unlocked italian 3G from ebay.

    That is the only choice!
    iPhone US 8GB
    FW 1.0.2--> iUnlock--> iPhoneSIMfree--> 1.1.1 --> 1.1.2--> Soft upgrade 1.1.3 --> 1.1.4 using signal.app
    iPhone UK 16GB
    FW 1.1.3 OOB --> 1.1.4 --> iPlus 1.2 unlocked!

    The more sensible approach would be to purchase one from the states at a reasonable price, and hold on - its days now before an unlock is released.

    See that's what i keep hearing, it's a matter of days. But is it really, look how long it took to unlock 4.6.

    Also, unless they have changed the inner workings of the iphone software, surely a US phone would work, if i was to jailbreak it and use an o2 sim or even an offical contract o2 sim card, it would recognise it, since it would have the official carrier files within the phone like the original one.

    There is a hardware difference - or at least iTunes does something between an unlocked and locked to a network phone.

    You will notice by looking at Apple's site that the different iPhones in different countries have different part numbers!

    Your right in saying that the firmware is the same but iTunes either tells the phone that it is from a certain country so it can only accept SIMs from that country or the phone is hard wired to only accept certain SIMs unless it is software unlocked.

    I have a US iPhone original model - I updated to 2.0 using pwnagetool but didn't click to unlock or activate by accident...

    I put my o2 SIM in and thought it would work as my SIM was an official SIM but it didn't! iTunes told me the SIM was invalid for the phone!

    I then unlocked it and it accepted the SIM.

    So that proves that a UK SIM will not work in a US iPhone unless it is unlocked first.

    So go get one from italy unlocked or get an official one.

    Or buy one from the US and wait for an unlock.

    But it could be months like the original iPhone or tommorrow before an unlock is out - its your call...

    France will let you unlock it officially but you have to have to pay extra and provide ID and prove your living in france.

    The phones are not unlocked out the box - they are locked to orange!

    Italy is the ONLY european country where the phones are factory unlocked and will work with any SIM!

    Hong Kong is also like that according to Apple's site at

    Some photos to prove it just in case anyone wondered!

    I am in the UK where O2 is the official "locked" network!

    There is an alternative now that UK 3G phones can be jailbroken and activated. Buy one in this condition and use any O2 sim in it :-)

    Of course I could be about to be flamed for talking rubbish as I won't be able to test this theory until I get home where my still unopened IPhone is awaiting me on Wednesday, but I have read posts along thee lines already.

    You are correct.

    You can use ANY O2 UK sim and it will work (it'll actually activate via iTunes too)
