Ok I have the option to buy an iPhone 3g that came from Rogers in Canada for a good price. The only problem I have is its stuck at the activation screen and I can't determine the firmware version.

How would it be possible to unlock it. Or is there a way to determine the firmware via the pc?

download quickpwn and run it to activate and jailbreak after that you will be able to check fw version on settings.

Thats what I was thinking but wont quickpwn ask me to select what firmware I'm running?

no it will check for the fw you have on the phone and than it will check you computer for the correct fw. if it finds the firewire it will show the name of it lets say (iPhone1,2_2.2 whatever.ipsw). if it dosent find the correct fw than it will say we could not lacate fw version ...... .
i will just say jailbreak and activate because this way you know what baseband you have as well.

Got it, thanks for the tips. I'll post results. Worst case scenario it has a baseband that can't be unlocked and I have an ipod touch

just try to restore it again make sure you try fw 2.2 first

it says 'your firmware is up to date' which means you have 2.2.1 matey, sorry but that cannot be unlocked yet.

Like he said, do a restore and it will then be ready to pwn/JB
