[iPhone 3G] Unlock competition
Hi,
for those of you desperately waiting for a soft unlock for the 3G iPhone: Why don't we start a competition for the first person/team to come up with one?
Something similar has been done for the 1.1.2 FW/4.6 BL. GeoHot cashed the prize at that time.
I think it's just an additional incentive for those who actually understand that stuff and it's only fair that they get something out of investing lots and lots of hours hacking the phone.
If only a small share of those interested in an unlock donate like $5, we should end up with a nice little jackpot!
I could provide a website, but I don't want to be responsible for the donations.
Let me know what you think.

I like the idea. But what happens if they never unlock it and who is going to collect donations?
-
-
We could do it like they did it - full refund (minus PayPal fees) if there is no unlock by the deadline.
I'm sure we'll find someone trustworthy to collect the money.

I'm on it now.

Maybe we can get the major iPhone forums to sponsor it? That would be great and probably rank in some loot! We need to get in contact with some forum administrators.
I don't have the time to help organize this thing. But I think if we get a joint effort with the major forums that should make for some big prize.

I don't have alot of time to dedicate to this but here is a plan if anyone is really serious about this and is willing to dedicate there time to getting it done.
1. Get in contact with all the major iPhone forum administrators. Let them no the plan.
2. Each forum should have one person in charge of donations. Mod or administrator.
3. We need a site to display statistics. How much donations from each forum, grand total of the prise and time line.
4. We should have a set date. First person to unlock the 3G my said time wins. If not all are refunded. Two months sound good?
5. Once its all set up submit it to all the major sites engadget, TUAW all the good ones. Just get as much attention as we can.
6. Let the games begin!

The dev team are not in it for the money. And I think its a lot more difficult than the previous model.
Just buy an official unlocked iPhone - a lot easier ! Open box, insert SIM, restore, upgrade to 2.02, use phone.

iPhone 3G S OFFICIALLY Unlocked 32 GB

Nothing wrong with a little friendly competition. If they win they can donate it to there favorite charity.
I cant buy an officially unlocked phone here in the US and I'm not paying the insane prices there asking for on ebay and other places.
Plus I already traded my first gen for a 3G when i herd they were able to downgrade the baseband of the 3G.
I know I jumped the gun. But that was a huge step and at the time I thought an unlock was inevitable.

exactly. I mean it's great that some ppl have officially unlocked phones, but some already have locked ones or prefer the cheaper alternative.
Anyway, as I said, I could provide the website and make a basic page. If we have someone to take care of PayPal we're all set.
