Smile [iPhone 3G][UK] PAYG Confirmed carrier, not SIM, lock

This may already be known but I just wanted to let UK owners of 3G iPhones know that they will activate with a zero-credit 10 O2 PAYG SIM with iTunes 7.7 without any drama.

I software-unlocked my v1 iPhone within seconds of Hotz' leaked CLI unlock (at 3am UK time back in September) so probably had one of the first unlocked Vodafone iPhones, and have been upgrading ever since. It's been stable on 1.1.4 and is my main business phone, so I've been off Hackint0sh for ages.

So as expected, putting the Vodafone SIM in my new 3G iPhone just gets an 'unapproved SIM' message from iTunes. But first step is easy - get a PAYG O2 SIM and activate. No need to sign any contract at this point (getting the phone of course without signing a contract is the other trick - I just bought one off eBay).

Next step - mess about with all the commands listed in the iTunes app (use strings on all the executables within the iTunes bundle, there are quite a few). I'll do this while waiting for Hotz, the 'Dev Team', Zibri and who knows else to stop bloody posturing and release some code...

Political argument aside, it appears that the units are already set up for PAYG, even though Apple and the carriers aren't selling PAYG units until 'later this year'. Mine immediately flashed up '0.00 credit' but is successfully on the O2 3G network - the software for PAYG is already in 2.0 by the looks of things (or at least the hooks into the baseband).

How much did you pay for your iPhone 3G off e-bay? I saw them going for 600+ which is equal to what you pay for the 18month contract + phone.

    550. OK so not so much of a bargain (then again, you should have seen how much I paid for my v1 iPhone from the USA....) but I'm in it for the hacking, couldn't give a shit about the cost.

It'd almost certainly be cheaper and easier to take out a contract and pay up front full fees to get O2 to unlock it 'officially' but I know that O2 customer service is appalling and the bureaucracy involved in doing this would take weeks. By then, who knows, some Polish or Russian guy could have cracked it

There's a reason all my business phones are on Vodafone and not O2, and I'm not switching. And this hacking lark is relaxation and fun for me, I don't code for a living.

Oddly enough there are 'unlocked' phones being sold on eBay for 1000+ and I'm not sure what that's all about. I don't want an unlocked phone, I want a locked one and unlock it myself... that's why I want George or the 'dev team' to release the code... so I can compile it myself, run it myself, have a bit of fun. One-click GUI? Fuck that, they should charge for it if it's that polished. It's a product worth money, and they know damn well that even though they can distribute it for free, and claim the moral high ground (and the legal indemnity) that backstreet phone shops across the world will download the Pwnage Tool (lame name lads) and charge clueless customers $50 to unlock.

Whoever creates the best tool, doesn't matter - unscrupulous types will charge people who don't have the information. Not everyone reads Hackint0sh or the 'Dev Team' blog and, hell, there are plenty of iPhone users who don't even read mainstream stuff like TUAW.

Waiting till it's complete won't stop the backstreet guys from charging to use it, however free the software really is. And the 'Dev Team' know this, and I suspect there are other motivations behind the holding back of the software.... but that's off topic.

Its interesting that you mention that, when I went to pickup my 3G on the 11th I saw in the Swisscom store (Switzerland) also an offer for a PAYG 3G iPhone. They had allocated a small stock of 8GB phones for this package and where already sold out but you can pick them up in the future for just 516 CHF. I am not sure but as apple state on there websites Swisscom does unlock 3G iphones internally so I'd assume here you can get that unlocked without any problems. Also I am not native so I can take the next possible 100 questions away.. Yes everyone can buy them.

I really can't stand O2 customer services and am too on Vodafone on my business phone. Orange is probably the worst however when I was trying to obtain my PAC code to migrate away from them, in the end they never even sent it!!

I'm seriously thinking about giving in though and taking out a contract, just trying to justify it to myself that its actually worth getting at the moment.

I bought my 3G iphone for 400 off ebay, getting tomorrow can't wait.
So it looks like the iphone will activate with any O2 sim then?

there does seems to be a difference in coding on some level in the iphone, since it knows the difference between UK O2 models and the US ones, I have a AT&T 1G iphone and itunes would prompt for AT&T activation and jailbreaking before the pwnage tool always required the AT&T sim to be put back in it.

I had wanted to see if my normal O2 sim would activate an O2 1G iphone my mate didn't want me messing aorund with his, since he is on full contract with them!

as for the sellers caliming an unlocked iphone, they're either cons or will bascially hold off shipping claiming delays etc etc until the unlock does come out.

cyberface, the iPhone wasn't specifically set up for PAYG, you get that message from O2 as standard. if you stick in you PAYG O2 sim in your 1G iphone and dial +#10# your credit will falsh up on the screen in the same way. but end of the day it is just anoher phone with a simlock!
