I am from germany and have a iphone 3g without any lock. In april I want to visit the usa and so I bought an AT&T PayAsYouGo SIM-card. I see, that there are any data options for the internet access over gprs/umts - and this is what I want.

In germany I have to insert the apn, user and password for the internet-access. But, whats the apn/user/password for the at&t prepaid card?

You dont have to do anything while in the US. The iPhone will use the AT&T carrier bundle - same settings. What I strongly recommend - first thing to do once you are in the US - from your iPhone with the Pay as you go simcard in - call (free) 611. It is a good voice based system, choose "data packages", AT&T offers 1 MB for 4.99 (what is shitty) and 100 MB for 19.99 whats ok. The amount of money for the package you choose is deducted from your account. You can easyly refill it with cards from wallgreens or so.

One more tipp to save money. Starbucks is everywhere is the US. They offer iPhone-plan users free Internet with the iPhone in any Starbucks - this work for pay as you go customers aswell. Just fire up your Webbrowser once at an Starbucks it will direct you to a page where you have to enter your phone #. You'll be sent an SMS then with the data for using Wi-Fi for 24 hours / free.

If you have access to the US iTunes Store, you might want to look for an app called "Easy WiFi for AT&T". it is 2.99 US$ but once setup while in the US at a Starbucks you'll just once enter your US phone number in the programms settings and have a one-click WiFi access at any Starbucks. cause Starbucks is all over, you'll start just use it a lot ;-)

Hello, I'm from Italy and I have the same need but I have a 2G unlocked iphone.
The ATT pay as you go sim card works really good (phone callings and text). But today I have correctly purchased the data package for 19.99 $ (100 MB) and it doesn't work... Do you have any idea what is the problem? Is because my iPhone is 2G and the SIM I have is 3G? Or even because my iPhone is unlocked with redsnow to fw 3.0?

I don't think it's because you used redsnow for unlocking. Have you activated data plan properly. make that sure. if so then that might be problem of your firmware. upgrade it to the latest version available.

I fixed it by uplading the .ipcc file. I really don't know if it is the right way, but know works fine also with 3.0 fw (not latest).
Anyway I will have the latest fw soon and I'll hope that still working.

My wife has an iphone 3gs, it could be have some problmes with Go phone pay as you go rate plan by at&t? Is it works fine also with 100 MB for 19.99 data plan?

I've got basically the exact situation described here, and just got a 3G pay as you go wireless card and activated the data plan as well.

it just doesn't work. no connection what so ever. I noticed this card doesn't even allow me to update the APN setting

here's what I have:
- unlocked iphone 3gs 32gb (purchased from Hong Kong)
- att pay as you go 3G card
- activated, added packaged

has things changed since the thread was last updated? (ie. new fw caused it to not work anymore... ?)

any advice will be much appreciated.
