iPhone 3G and T-Mobile's 3G 1700Mhz Frequency
There is a posibility that the iPhone 3G supports T-Mobile's 1700 Mhz frequency. Obviously, 1700Mhz is not listed in the official specifications released by Apple, and the firmware itself might not support it or have it disabled, but the actual chip itself may actually support this frequency. If true, could not it be possible to enable it in the firmware. This news story claims that it is a 6-band chip.
In terms of unlocking, GSM is a standard. Can't a firmware from an opersource phone be modified to work with the Infineon chip similar to how there is OpenWRT or DD-WRT firmwares that turn a $60 LinkSys router into a $600 by adding a lot of functionality common in expensive routers? Wouldn't it be easier to replace the firmware instead of constantly hacking it?

Can someone move this into the developer's forum?

are you sure this is the chipset that is in the 3G iPhone?

A developer can confirm that. But, this is what I hear.

I can confirm that a so-called "officially" unlocked iPhone 3G (which I got from Italy) works with T-Mobile 3G here in Chicago. Yes, 3G icon and 3G speeds. I can also confirm that a TurboSIM'd AT&T phone can only hook up to EDGE right now; however I'm not sure if it's due to the phone's hardware/firmware or rather the TurboSIM's limitations.

Wow, that's a very good news.
All phones are the same, so the fact that the TurboSIM'd AT&T can only do EDGE is probably due to TurboSIM.
But from what I heard T-Mobile has both 1700 and 2100 bands, so maybe you are lucky to have 2100 in your area.

Do you have to have a special data plan and/or SIM card to get 3G, or does it work with just the T-Zones and a regular SIM? I'm in the Chicago area too, and I wanna leave AT&T so badly.
I tried using Universal-SIM on T-mobile, and all I got was EDGE, so I guess that counts as a TurboSIM, right?

I get 3G speeds using a turboSIM here in Sweden on the carrier 3's network.

i think he said he is using a normal t-mobile sim, on an officially unlocked phone. any kind of sim hacks such as universal sim, gewey (or w/e it's called) turbo sim, or any other ones.. you can't get any 3g
