Here is my cost breakdown analysis

    3g iPhone 200
    ATT 900 minute plan 60
ATT data plan with unlimited text, mobile to mobile, nights and weekends, and internet $30

    total monthly $90

compare to unlocked generation 1 iPhone

    iPhone 400
Tmobile 1000 minute plan with mobile to mobile, nights and weekends free $50
    add unlimited text $10
    add EDGE internet $6

    Total monthly $66

so to me, the difference is that it costs 24 dollars more per month to have 3G, and the phone costs $200 less.. that means that after month 8, your 200 dollar iPhone is costing you the same as the original 400 dollar iPhone.

From month 8 forward, you are spending 24 dollars more per month to have 3g, forever.. that is 288 dollars per year, to have 3g instead of EDGE

oh, plus you get Visual Voicemail :-)

IF you get reception from ATT in your area.. I dont, so Im waiting for the unlock for FW2.0 to gain the ability to use the telephone simultaneously with the internet, while in wifi range..

what I really want is voice turn by turn directions on my iPhone, without having to pay an extra monthly service for it.. I hear TomTom may have such a product, and it may even be compatible with iPhone One.

You cannot see the Iphone as piece of hardware you buy for a certain price because you cannot buy just the hardware. The "product Iphone" includes a subscription+phone. Make one cheaper, make the other one more expensive, the grand total won't change.
I actually like Steve Jobs, i was not trying to bash him. It is just fun to see how marketing works and Apple is very good at that trick. If a company really cares about everybody being able to buy their product, they would sell it for a price with little to no profit. Since Apple shareholders like to see their company make profit so they make money, this will not happen. Companies are interested in making money, as much as possible. So when the CEO of a big company stands on a stage and claims they want to make their product affordable for everybody by selling it cheaper, I can't help it, but I have to grin. I don't judge them because of it , that's marketing. But the claim that a 3G Iphone will cost you less money than a 2G Iphone is simply not true.
Make no mistake about it though, I want that 3G Iphone.
and here in the US you cant buy a vehicle without buying gas (unless it's a kia, then you get free gas for a year....) and insurance for it. and again, we go back to the fact that jobs has nothing to do with ATT pricing and that every one knows that if you wanna have a cell phone you have to pay a monthly fee for service. on ANY phone. SE didnt tell me i had to pay more money for my wife to be able to send pics when i bough her the t637 "on sale". does that make them deceptive? the first iphone didnt cost $4-500 + 24 months at x price a month because nobody here has had it for that long and most people here WONT have it for that long. for all anybody knows, ATT could drop their prices next month... if apple has nothing to do with it, why would they mention it? JObs has no idea how much ATT is going to be charging in the future. their prices CAN and likely WILL come down.. or maybe not.. who here really knows? plus he could have just sold the second gen iphone at the same price as the first gen. many people here expected it. some expected it to be higher. and nobody was complaining then. and i think everyone here knew you were going to have to pay a carrier for monthly cell service. so whats changed?

t-mobiles 1000 minute plan is $60. just like att 900 minute plan. NOT $50. quit trying to shortchange me yess ATT is 100 minutes less a month but they give you rollover and visual voicemail. t-mo doesnt. and you're counting a hack that allows you to sitck it to tmo over their data plan for people who dont really use the net. even if the iphone WAS going to be sold unlocked and fully compatible with t-mo steve jobs STILL wouldnt have mentioned that as t-mo's data plans are the same as ATTs. $30 for the sidekick plan with unlimited data and text. plus t-mo woulda probably fixed that hack or gotten rid of that plan alltogether. so really it's:
att first gen iphone- 60+30=90 a month + $4-500 for the phone
t-mo first gen iphone-60+30=90 a month +$4-500 for the phone
    t-mo network service-sucks ass. customer service-great
att network service-great. customer service- sucks ass

Technically, you could argue that that extra $10/month is going towards the 3G data service and not the iPhone itself, but my bank account doesn't stay full just because i'm supporting AT&T instead. Yes, the iPhone itself is cheaper, but the cost of ownership, the more important aspect, has actually increased mildly.
so you'll be paying an extra $40 over 2 years for better data speeds and GPS.... that comes to about $1.67 more a month for a newer more advanced product... and this is what we're crying over? ohfortheloveof.........

i really think the new iphone is a bit of a fail, i think sales will be fairly poor, i hope people dont get sucked in too badly

i mean i know the cunning/mean apple tactics,

what i really want is a competitor to provide a decent product to compete and hit apples unwillingness to improve

please someone give me another option!

I somehow don't think iphone 3g will fail. This is because there are a lot of people (like me) who didn't want to go for original iphone as you have to pay 269, then stick to an 18month contract for a minimum 35.

Now, the contract is the same, but the iphone has gone cheaper (UK), so i think apple have been smart to target other countries apart from the USA. SO, there will be a lot less unlocked phones, and more will sign up to official carriers as they get unlimited internet.

    Normal 35/month o2 contract: 600mins and 400txts,
so, in the iphone tariff you will get 200 less text, but have unlimted internet (which will cost an additional 7.50 in normal contracts).

So, if you consider the overall picture, a lot of people will buy iphone 3g (in the UK that is). There is also the option of buying pay as you go, and rumours predict that it will cost 269.

Only thing that gets me is that fact i have to pay $10 more a month for 3G access... when the closest place that has 3G near me is like 600 miles or something. So i might get it after i move... but charging for a service that isn't even available where im at is rediculous.

    > t-mobiles 1000 minute plan is $60. just like att 900 minute plan. NOT $50. quit trying to shortchange me

it says $49 on Tmobile site here: http://tinyurl.com/48d45z

and internet is not $30 for a Tmobile iPhone, its $19 for the Total Internet Plan, which gives you FREE internet at all STARBUCKS, or you can give up the starbucks hotspots, and just pay $5.99, not 30.

then there is the $39 plan at Tmo with 600 minutes, 500 text, free nights, free mobile to mobile.. add the 5.99 internet plan, and youre done for $45 a month, compared to $90 for ATT... a difference of $45 a month!

gotta love my gen 1 iPhone

as to needing 3g.. well, my phone reception does suck, so no 3g for me, no edge either, no wifi either, and no cell phone reception either, so no phone based GPS navigation either..when Im driving around in unpopulated areas, which I do often.

the most internet use I do on my iPhone happens at coffee shops, with free wifi, or at home, with free wifi..

so when will I be happy to have 3g, well, maybe in my car in an urban area... in a restaurant, where phones are forbidden in california, and england.. but I digress.. :-)

keep in mind my Garmin GPS works where my cell phone does not.. I doubt the iPhone gps NAVIGATION will function with no cell phone connection.. I say that because the mapping software is internet/wireless, not internal map based like Garmin.. please help educate me otherwise if Im mistaken.. what I mean is yes the gps in iPhone will plot you on a map, but the map is being served by cell phone towers, not built into the iPhone, the way the map is built into a gps.. the iPhone just draws the map it downloads from the internet.. no cell reception, no internet, no map to plot the gps signal onto.. make sense?

ps, for $49 you can have a business line with 1000 minutes, free mobile to mobile, free nights and weekends, and the first 500 text messages free. To have a business line you have to have 2 phone numbers with Tmobile..

so imagine that plan plus the 5.99 internet.. hmmm. $55 a month including 500 text and all the bells and whistles ATT sells for $90... correct me if Im wrong

I do still want the new iPhone, unlocked

"jon_slider- correct me if I'm wrong.."

    If you insist.
The $49 plan doesn't include my fav five OR unlimted mobile2mobile. You have to get the $59 plan to compare it to AT&T 900 plan which is also $59. As for the data, its $30 with unlmited text msging. $20 without. Just like ATTs. And youre using a hack to use the $6 plan in a way t-mo didnt intend you to use it. You can't compare it. And AT&T will now be the one giving free wifi at barnes n nobles and mcdonalds if rumors are to be believed.

Total internet from T-Mobile will still be cheaper ($19.99) compared to ATT iPhone data plan ($30). Plus you get hotspots which include Starbucks. I rather have Starbucks anytime than Barns and Noble. Plus if you already have DSL from ATT, you automatically get the Barns and Noble hotspot.

The bottom line is that T-Mobile provides excellent coverage where I live and is so much cheaper.

Right now I have a family plan with 2 regular cell phones and 2 iPhones (I only need the data plan for one iPhone).

This is what I pay for T-Mobile:

    T-mobile
    Family plan (700 minutes) $ 59.99
    2 additional phones $ 19.98
    unlimited messaging $ 20.00
    T-Zone with proxy hack $ 5.99
    Total $105.96

This is what I would have to pay for ATT today (+ $54.01 per month or $648.12 per year):

    ATT
    Family plan (700 minutes) $ 69.99
    2 additional phones $ 19.98
    unlimited messaging $ 30.00
2 iPhone data plan (no choice) $ 40.00
    Total $159.97

This is what I would have to pay in the future for ATT (+ $74.01 per month or $888.12 per year):

    ATT
    Family plan (700 minutes) $ 69.99
    2 additional phones $ 19.98
    unlimited messaging $ 30.00
2 iPhone data plan (no choice) $ 60.00
    Total $179.97

The bottom line is cost. You might argue that I get more service from ATT (i.e. 3G, visual voicemal, etc) but I don't care about these services. I only care about the monthly cost.

    Alan
