Are you sure you have the exact same problem? You are trying to restore an IPSW made with winpwn (so iOS 2.x)??
Or do you just have error 6? Which can also be USB related.

How do u put the phone into DFU when its on recovery? I tried turning it off by holding both buttons. Then, power button for 3 sec. then hold both for 10 sec. and release power while holding home button for another 30 sec. but before that its already back to recovery mode.

I've posted several times about how to enter DFU mode when you can't shut down the phone.
The procedure you refer to requires that you manage to shutdown the phone in the first step. I don't think that this is happening in your case.
Make sure the phone is plugged in to power via the dock connector cable/USB
Hold down both buttons until the screen goes black, then keep on holding the buttons for another 5 seconds.
Then release sleep/power and keep holding home until iTunes detects the phone in "recovery mode" (this takes less than 30 seconds)
The screen should stay black during this whole time.

By any chance did you jailbreak and install wi-fi sync? If so, I had same problem. I de-installed from PC and restore worked! Just had an epiphany after about 10 hours of frustration.

My instructions are clear, and plenty of other people have managed to follow these instructions. Try again and if you still have problems - describe the specific step where you are stuck.

My husband is trying to use my iPhone 3G while he's waiting for his replacement phone. We have been reading through this thread and the info is great! Only problem is that we can't get the phone to stay with a black screen unless it's ACTUALLY off. The screen stays with the picture of the power button and a USB cable. If he tries to restore the phone he gets error 14 or 2001. I have looked up fixe via Apples website but these do not work. The phone is not jailbroken.
He is using a PC with Windows. He has done the Start -> Run -> %appdata% thing and deleted contents and emptied the trash.
Any ideas or do you need more info?

Slaine, I assume the phone is in the connect to iTunes screen as I have never seen nor read about a USB and a power button screen on the iPhone. So, what you wanna do is as follow.
Restart the computer,
Turn On the iPhone,
Connect it to the computer,
Open iTunes (make sure the phone pops in iTunes, otherwise we have a different issue),
Hold Power and Home Buttons,
When the phone goes off keep holding both buttons for 3 seconds,
Release power button and keep holding the Home Button until iTunes recognizes it and gives you the small windows that says an iPhone in recovery mode has been detected.
Restore.
Do you need to unlock the phone as well?

I've done exactly what is said to do about going to run and putting in %appdata%. But what restore setting should i be using? I have no clue about like 4.3.3 etc. How do i know which one i should be using?
My problem with my iPhone is:; It was jailbroken and i forgot the passcode for it so i had to restore it back to normal settings. I attempted to restore it and now i'm sure it's stuck in recovery mode. I have attempted to use resnow again and recboot and nothing is working.
