Default [iPhone 3G] Poor operation compared to 1st Gen iPhone

I have to say I am somewhat disappointed with my 3G iPhone!

I have noticed things due to my vacation circumstances that most people would never see with a single phone and be oblivious to its short-comings!

I am currently vacationing in New York with my wife. I unlocked her iPhone Ver 1 several months ago but because she uses it daily and has no need for any of the newer features, I never got round to updating it. Her phone is software unlocked and is still running on 1.1.1

    I have a new 3G iPhone running 2.0 (5A347).

Today we did the tourist thing (bus / boat tour). Admitidly I took more photo's on my phone than she did, but my phone ran out of battery (after being fully charged) by about 2pm today!
I made no calls and took no calls all day, I missed one call and I had Wifi off!

My wifes phone in contrast was still showing full capacity so I guess Apple were right about 3G in the first place!!

Also, if the phone signal metering is anything to be believed (on both phones), the 3G is again very poor in comparison, I was showing barely any signal (synced to AT&T) in our hotel room whilst my wifes phone shows full signal. My wifes phone being unlocked was also quie nicely switching to other networks, theres was one point today when I noticed she was showing full signal on t-mobile, whilst I was barely getting anything again on AT&T still :-(

Before anyone suggests I have a faulty phone, I have been dealing with iPhones since the launch last July and I don't believe there is anything wrong with the 3G unit I have, I just think its an unfortunate case of the old saying, "be careful what you wish for".

Being from the UK, I was sad to see 3G not in the initial iPhone as our mobile networks are somewhat more advanced than North America (of-course its a lot easier to update a small island like ours than a huge place like the USA) but despite Apples claims about battery life now they have bowed to pressure and released the 3G), they were right in the first place, it sucks :-)

IMHO 3g and firmware 2.0 both kinda suck, i have both the old and the new iphones, both running on 2.0.

the 2.0 in the old i phone runs like shit, the touch screen would get non responsive a lot and the phone will hang a lot, aaps would crash for no reason and the phone will restart by itself. i mean 2.0 has a few nice features but is still very buggy. 1.1.4 was the most stable firmware ever.

and 3G i dont even wanna start ranting about it. battery life is soo poor, reception sucks, aaps crash again, the only good thing about it is the GPS and the white back!! i did not notice a much difference in the sound of the old and new
<----------Gimme some thumbs up if u like my help.

    > full signal on t-mobile, whilst I was barely getting anything again on AT&T

that is not a difference caused by the 2G and 3G phones, it is just the difference in cell tower coverage of the two different companies.

I have no reception from ATT at my home in USA, but get full bars from Tmobile, thats why I unlocked.

    > If I turn off 3G, I get the same (or better) reception as my original iPhone and the same (or better) battery life.

thanks for the info on poor battery life being based on using 3G

3G is not widely available, and when the phone searches for signal in a weak area, it uses a LOT more power.

this is also true for 2G
If I leave my phone on when I go to an area of no reception, it is possible to drain the battery in 3 hours.. I have a FW 1.1.4 iPhone unlocked on Tmobile USA

and thanks for the warnings about FW 2.0 issues with slow performance, crashes, intermittent wifi, and spontaneous reboots

I think I will stay at FW 1.1.4 for now.

And, just for the record, I dont think pwnage is causing all the problems people are reporting..

I think the problems with pwned 2G iphones, are coming from FW 2.0, not the unlock method.

    just my perspective

Well I have a first gen Iphone with 2.0 and I have to admit that I'm sorry I upgraded.. Many times it becomes unresponsive or takes one or two seconds to respond to a touch! The new functions are not that great at all...

So, not only have I lost all my installed programs (ok, i expected that), but the thing is way slower than 1.1.4! And as we are still without the new version of Installer and compatible programs, i only have AppleStore and Cydia as software sources. Well Cydia sucks as it's very rigid and doesn't have much yet ...(I don't care if its methods are better, I want the same software i had, not a bunch of technical tools...)

But then there's the Apple Store... where I happen to live in brazil and they have now an itunes store for us....but guess what... no games at all are available for purchase! (I love gaming on the iphone...) And I can't use my credit card with a US account either (it doens't even allow my paypal account), so the App Store is pretty useless for me... only good for getting the free Apps.

Then there's the caller ID that is not working at all... Apple added support for 70 countries but didn't have the time to configure caller ID? Come on.... at least there I found a way to fix it manually by editing the plists...

So my suggestion is, stick with 1.1.4 until the next firmware comes out...

wtf sad to read so many complaints affink the release of 3G was rushed beta testing of the 2.0 fw has failed to complete its job. :iphone: As I am yet to receive mine in the mail it can't be as useful as my good old 1st gen loaded with apps other than GPS and internet

the difference is battery life really is due to the 3G, 3G does completely suck the battery life down.

also for the signal difference it coz your iphoen is showing 3G signal, while the original iphone is showing normal signal.

if you switch 3G off on your iphone you'll find the reception will be the same and battery life will be better too.

what I do is only swithc on 3G when i need the fast data, e.g. browsing web or checkign my emails.
