Question iPhone 3G Officially Unlocked Voicemail

    Hi

I apologise if this has been asked before but I have searched and not found a satisfactory answer.

I have purchased an officially unlocked iPhone 3G from Italy and I am using in with an operator that is not on Apple's official list. I understand that I can't have Visual Voicemail since this is dependent on a contract with one of Apple's official operators. However, the Voicemail button I assume should dial the number to my operator's voicemail similar to holding "1" on the keypad of another mobile. However, when I press and hold "1" or press on the Voicemail button nothing happens.

I found that by using the following *5005*86*xxx# where "xxx" is replaced with my operator's voicemail number, the button functions.

My question is what actually happens when you use the above code? Is the phone modified? Will it "lose" this if restored?

Finally, why isn't this information on Apple's website for those who have purchased officially unlocked phones?

    Thanks

P.S. One other thing. The voicemail number used in the above code will it work when you are abroad roaming?

With the code, the voicemail number of your carrier is set to the buttom. I have an unlocked aswell, did not have to use the code. On some carriers you have to - was the same at firmware 1.x.
You will have to do it again after an update to a newer firmware or a restore - but thats no big deal.
Apple does not care for this group of customers. The unlocked are sold cause Apple has to to meet the national law in those countries.
If you jailbreak your iPhone, you could - as an alternative - create a custom carrier bundle with the vm number in. This would have to be re-done on an upgrade aswell.

volkpost thanks for your reply. Just curious, but how was this code "discovered" if anyone knows? Are there more codes like this that I might find useful?

    Thanks

Oh, there are tons of codes you can use. Dont know who published this one first at Hack0.
Some apply to all GSM phones some dont. One example: If on your iPhone "Show caller-ID" is set to on try #31#phonenumber and the callerID wont be shown for this call.
Or try *#06# and hit call. the iPhone will display its IMEI.

If you are interested just google for gsm codes, here are a few urls (remember when trying, not all codes work with all the carriers/phones, some are special to a carrier or phone)

Just to add this to be complete. The voicemail-code is an iPhone-specific, as the some others are. They are not related to gsm codes as far as I know. but there is more as you see. I use the dont show caller-id every now and then:hack::hack:

I did some more searching and eventually came across the post you might have been referring to on this forum.
