Default [iPhone 3G] [O2 UK - activation and lock status]

One of the 1st UK folks to get an iPhone 3G, so just wanted to recount a few experiences and details:

    1. O2 UK crashed completely this morning. No is is able to activate a new account or upgrade at the moment. This is an O2 issue, not apple

    2. O2 are allowing people to fill in the paperwork and leave the store having signed a new contract, with phone and SIM, but the SIM will not work until "later"

    3. Connecting to iTunes lets you activate the phone, but no signal of course

    4. O2 phones appear to be locked (unlike the HK ones)- replacing the currently dead O2 sim with a live Voda one yields an "invalid SIM" message

So, all you UK guys, have fun like me queuing for hours, getting you shiny phone home and then finding it's essentially an iPod until O2 sort their act out!

But if the handset was free?? They just took details and a copy of my debit card and that was it could easily have had a fake/stolen card and walked out with a free phone!

I was there at 6.40 it was raining etc but had a laugh, the main O2 shop in cardiff had 5 sales desk so it took two hours for me to get mine with only 30 people in front of me! Could have got a 16gb as they had about 20 but just got the 8gb, and in work waiting to play but without it being activated dont suppose there is much i could do anyway

The smaller carphone warehouses had about 11 phones each but only 2 people wanted one in cardiff store so literally in at 9am and done in ten minutes

I upgraded mine this morning at 9am on the dot. Computer system down, went to paper format.

Walked out with a 3G iphone, upgraded etc working no worries. Came home put my old sim in and away I went

I really feel for those who were signing up as new customers.....its a shambles

So does this mean that if you're using a SIM for an authorized carrier, you can pop it in and it'll work?

Should do, but for those wondering if they can grab a phone without a contract because of the activation and paperwork cock up, think again.... when you sign the forms, they take all your bank details and check the debit card etc, so no joy there.

3pm now and I'm still waiting for my SIM to get turned on. Ho hum....

Im in uk too, got the ipone this morning and itunes is coming up errors saying it cant access itunes store etc, so i havnt even been able to activate it or anything. I also went into an o2 shop as i was coming home and they said i should be able to activate and the sim card should work right away.
