Default [iPhone 3G][Not confirmed] Works with a regular AT&T Sim Card

I need to confirm this so don't jump on this post yet.

A friend of mine on the west coast got the new iPhone 3G and of course had to activate it in the store. Once home, he took the SIM card that came with the iPhone out and inserted a regular active Cingular/AT&T SIM card into the new iPhone and it worked.

Out of curiosity, he took a T-Mobile SIM card and inserted into the new iPhone and he said it did not reject the SIM card, and he was able to use it too.

I am going to ask another friend locally here who also got the new iPhone 3G to confirm.

    Stay tuned...

    [UPDATE]
Finally met up with a local friend who just got the new 3G iPhone. We inserted an active T-Mobile SIM card and, of course, it did not reject it...however, there was no network search hence no signal. I contacted my friend from the west coast and he admitted that since the iPhone did not display the "Invalid SIM" message he assumed that the SIM would allow to make calls, etc.

    I have an activated AT&T iPhone 3G

I can confirm that my phone works with other NON-iPhone AT&T SIM cards. Just popped in the SIM from a Motorola and it connected to AT&T.

Has anyone tried this with a 1st generation iPhone upgraded to the 2.0 SW?

Specifically, what I'm interested in is if you have a 1st gen iPhone, upgrade it to 2.0 SW, then pop in an AT&T Sim from another phone (not another iPhone, but a 'regular' phone) will it work?

With the T-Mobile card inserted, does it connect to T-Mobile?

I have verified this does NOT work with the original AT&T blue sim cards. This is pre Cingular AT&T
-Dell D600 running osx fulling working-
-8gb Apple Iphone running with AT&T blue service-

I can confirm that you CANNOT put a SIM from an AT&T non-iPhone into an upgraded, unactivated 1st-gen iPhone and get past the activation screen.

I had a 1st Gen iPhone which I had Pwned/unlocked so I could use the SIM from my work-issued AT&T Treo. I upgraded to 2.0 through iTunes and when it rebooted after the upgrade, iTunes asked to activate just like I had purchased a new 1st Gen iPhone.

So, I downgraded back to 1.1.4 and will await the new Pwnage tool with everyone else.
