Iphone 3g no Wifi and greyed out. Complete newcomer to iphones. much appreciation
I bought a iphone 3g today. Well, it was my first iphone. They didn't have internet and i didn't know any better, but the internet setting says no wifi and is greyed out. I was looking when i got home and it still didn't recognise anything. I found that it was jailbroken. Well somehow it has been restored and is not jailbroken now. It was restored or something. I don't know what i did, but the cydia is gone now. The nowifi is still showing gray. I have read a lot and there is more or less 2 probable issues. Hardware or due to jailbreaking and upgrading of the software. One note, the bluetooth does work and the 3g switch works back and fourth and does show "on". Is there a way to tell if it can be fixed or something to try and see what happens? I don't know the history or the phone, so i don't know when or how it started. And they won't give my money back, so that is not an option. Thanks in advance for any and all help. It is greatly appreciated.

If you had bothered to search then you would have discovered that there is little we can do to help without a log file (console or syslog). Publish that and maybe we can help.
Wifi issues are to my knowledge NEVER caused directly by jailbreaking - so your existing sources of information regarding this are suspect.
Wifi issues are caused by: hardware (wifi antenna disconnected/damaged/broken, thermal issues causing intermittent wifi) or software (blacksn0w/iOS race condition where the wifi chip gets reset at a critical time). See Wifi Problems - The iPhone Wiki for details.

I didn't. Know that it was broke when I bought it. But that's behind me now. How do I f d a log file to post what it says? Or are there other checks that can be done to see what's wrong? It is not intermittent, it never works.

The easiest way to get a log file is to use Apple's Enterprise Configuration Utility (free) which allows you to view the console log.
Otherwise sbsettings plus the syslog toggle and then use SFTP to copy the resulting log from the iPhone to your computer.

Well i used to have an ipod that was jailbroken and remember the sbsettings. The phone has been reset or something and it doesn't appear to be jailbroken anymore. So, i guess the only way would be the apple software you said. I will try and find that software and see what happens.

It looks as though there is a hardware error with the WiFi chip -- if you look at the log you see a lot of entries that show "Operation not permitted", etc. I recommend taking the phone into an Apple store to have them look at it, it is most likely something that only replacing hardware can fix.

n1ckn4m3,
Thanks for the reply. The message "Operation not permitted" could be due to getting text massage when taking log and I do not have data plan. Should I generate another log?

Did it happen more than once? The log file is filled with those errors, so I don't believe it relates to SMS. That said, more digging about the "mc_mobile_tunnel" specifically indicates that it may not be indicative of this problem -- people complaining about it on the internet usually do so in conjunction with the concept of replacing certificates on the iPhone using the Configuration Utility or in the concept of deploying a configuration to their enterprise. I hate to say I don't really know enough to point at what could be the problem here. Perhaps Olethros can take a peek and see something I'm missing?
