I have an interesting situation, here.
My iPhone 3G is in need of an OOW repair in order to connect to a cellular data network; I knew that when I bought it, which is why it only cost me $50. I figured that, if I'd be using it without a SIM, $50 wasn't bad for an ipod touch with a camera function, and all had been well in that department so far.
Then I made the mistake of upgrading to iOS4 without unlocking the iPhone, and because 3G models undergo a restore in order to upgrade to iOS4, my iPhone is now stuck in recovery mode with a message saying "No SIM card Installed - Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone".
So my question is: is there any way that I can unlock it and hacktivate it in its current state, or do I have to wait and hope that jailbreak software comes out that can grapple with the firmware update the new iOS4 came with? I've tried using redsn0w retroactively, and it won't recognize the iOS4 beta firmware as the corresponding ipsw for my current firmware. I've downloaded the iOS4b4 from various sources, in case I just downloaded one or two bad files, but it's consistently not recognized.
I'm new to all this, and thus currently at a bit of a loss. All suggestions (more useful ones than iphone defenestration or conflagration, please) greatly appreciated.
