Default [iPhone 3G] Locked Phone "Unlocked"

First, let me emphasise the quotes in the subject title: "Unlocked".

You can read of my experience here.

Singtel is a the first telco in Singapore to offer the iPhone on 22 August 2008.

The subject phone in the link above was not officially unlocked prior to my fiddling with it.

How were you able to get to the new activation screen? I tried with a AT&T iPhone and a Claro SIM but only get invalid SIM error messages in iTunes.

I wonder if it has something to do with it being a Telstra phone.

    Edit: Was it pwned?

In hopes that persistence would prevail, I kept calling Apple and AT&T trying to get mine unlocked... I was eventually informed that if you put in a sim card from an authorized carrier that you can then reactivate the phone for use with that carrier.

Unfortunately the foreign SIMs I have in my possession now are not for any of the authorized carriers... I am however going to be in Paris in about a week, where I plan to attempt to reactivate my AT&T iPhone 3G with an Orange France SIM card... I'm hopeful that this will work, especially with what mauler reports.. Yet, I am trying to remain somewhat pessimistic incase of failure.... I will report my finding as soon as I have them...

    Hi there ColSanders,

I will be very interested on how it worked with Orange FR. I have just returned from Paris with an iPhone, but cannot get it working with my Orange Romania SIM cards. Orange RO will officially launch the product on the 22nd of August, so if the re-activation with a supported carrier works that'll be good news Thanks and good luck.

Claro is also an official carrier scheduled for release on August 22nd. I'm not having any luck getting this to work.

I think this greatly depends on Apple's servers... I've found that if i simply change the SIM and plug into iTunes, nothing happens, but if I shut the phone off, change the SIM, turn the phone on, and then plug into iTunes I get a message telling me something to the extent of the sim card is not an authorized carrier, and to insert a sim card from an authorized carrier and then connect to iTunes to activate....

I do have a sim card from Vodafone Egypt, which is listed on Apple's site as a future carrier, but iTunes says its not an authorized carrier... My belief, and possibly just hopeful, is that Apple has not included them as an authorized carrier yet. However, Orange FR is currently, so my hope is that it will be recognized and allow activation. You may have to wait until the launch is official to use the local carrier in this manner, and mauler experienced a lucky situation where the carrier was authorized early... I don't know...

    What happened was this:

    1) Put Singtel SIM into iPhone. No signal.

    2) Connect iPhone with Singtel card to computer. iTunes launched.

    3) iTunes flashed a message saying there was an update for my iPhone. Choices were 'Cancel', 'Download', 'Download and Update'. I selected 'Download' - ONLY.

    4) As download commenced, iPhone's screen flickered from the SpringBoard to the 'Connect to iTunes' screen. Then flickered to the usual deactivated, emergency calls-only screen. I was horrified, since it wasn't my phone. I could have pwned it but didn't want to since it wasn't my phone.

    5) While being horrified, an SMS arrived (interestingly, because that meant a live signal). The SMS message had the options 'Close' or 'Reply'.

    6) I hit 'Reply' and it brought me to the SMS. I pressed the 'Home' button and it brought me back out to the SpringBoard.

    7) I removed the Singtel card and put in another local telco's card. Phone continued working.

I did nothing of note and was surprised by what happened. To follow a hunch, I restored my 2.5G iPhone with said Singtel card. After the restore, iTunes told me I was using a wrong SIM. So I guess the above only worked - in my case - with 3G phones only.

It's possible that Telstra had something to do with it.

No, the phone wasn't pwned. It was 'virgin'.

I have 2 other iPhone 3G, purchased from the US. I will attempt the same process and see what happens. I'll post findings here later.

    Thanks!
