Default iPhone 3G just keeps restarting!! Help please :)

I just got this phone from somebody. Its an iPhone 3g. It wont get past the apple logo and spinning wheel. When plugged in it will say its charging then automatically keeps rebooting. I have tried a million times to put in DFU mode unsuccessfully. I am sure I am doing it right, as I have gotten other iphones in DFU before. Also iTunes does not recognize it at all so I can't just restore. Been at it for hours thought I might come here and see if any one has some advice or solution to this?? Thanks so much!

This could be a hardware issue.

When the battery is nearly flat and you are in a startup bootloop, it can be tricky to get the device into DFU. The battery has to have some charge before it will get into DFU. However during the bootloop (apple logo/spinning wheel) the phone doesn't charge and actually uses battery trying to boot.

could even been a bad battery seen this before a few times, do u know if its been water damaged? i had a probelm with a 3gs the other day like that and managed to fix it, using heat taking the logic board out, but do not try this as if u do it wrong then u end up with a dead phone, try replacing the battery for a oem one first see what happens, then we can move on from there,
