Default [iPhone 3G] How to keep WIFI alive so I can tether with screen off??

I have tether working but the only problem is that iphone drops wifi connection after like 30 seconds if I have the screen off. I dont want to have the screen on, it kills the battery, any ideas?

Download Insomnia from Cydia, it keeps wifi on when the screen is on.

Actually, that's not entirely true. I've been playing around with tethering on my iPhone 3G (using SSH tunneling) and, while Insomnia DOES keep the wifi connection alive, you still need to keep auto-lock to "Never."

Even though the wifi stays alive with Insomnia, the tethering will still stop working after a few minutes of use. I don't remember exactly the problem I was having.. I think the default route on the iPhone reverted from the 3G connection to the wifi. It was either that or the DNS would fail to resolve. I had this problem repeatedly, even while running Insomnia, until I kept the screen on -- after that, i had no connection issues for over 4 hours.

I'll post again if I have time to try it later, but can anyone else confirm this?

I just installed the app, and it seems to hold fine even after locking the screen. The only thing I cannot get it to work, is make anything else connect other than safari....

Check the hosts file on the phone.

What exactly am I looking for in the host file?

From what I have been reading from various forums, this seems to be a dns problem. Apparently I have to run bind on the iphone for Leopard to work for any apps other than safari (mail for example). Its gotten so complicated the process, Im not even sure tether is worth it at this point. If anyone else have experience with tethering please post

If you are using windows, download sockscap (google it).
It will let you "socksify" all the applications on your windows machine and will use the iPhone socks proxy for internet connection.

I tested this and its working with most applications.
