Default [iPhone 3G] How to buy in US without being stuck to contract ?

    Hey,

I searched the forums but i couldn't find anything about this subject.
Is it possible to buy an iphone in the US (or whatever other country.. because the 3g is in a lot of countries now), without a contract?
If I go from Holland to the US and buy an iphone in the ATT shop.. the contract has to be activated and such, but when i go back to holland, i still would have to pay for the contract i signed right..

Is it possible to evaid this? I heard that you could buy an iphone in switzerland and not pay a contract.

I would like some more info about this subject please

Well heres what you can do, if you have some sort of United states ID and can get approved for one line of service then all you have to do is pay the $175 USD and get out of the contract.

Go to AT&T and buy the iPhone with a 2 year contract. At time of purchase you'll be paying $200 or $300 depending on phone, $36 activation and a minimum $70 for the first month. the contract says if the contract is cancelled with in the first 30 days you must return the phone, so if u cancel the contact after the first 30 days, you pay the ETF of $175 and keep the phone. Aprox Price for 8gb is $500 and for 16gb its $600. Thats $100 cheaper than the non-contract Iphone coming out later in the year.

Checkout the fully unlocked offers in both France and Germany before going to all this trouble. Between the price of the flight to the US, the sign-on fees and get out of ATT jail fees, you'll have spend far more than the 800/900 EUR that Orange etc will hit you up for.

Nah, cancel within the first 30 days and give a reason for canceling and all you pay is the 175$. I just canceled mine on the grounds that reception is shoddy and the 3G network keeps shifting on/off.

    Edit:
I just got off the phone with them, since I canceled within 3 days, I get no termination fee, no first month fee, no activation fee, NO FEE at all, except for purchasing the iPhone 8Gbs at 200$, which I can keep, or return within 30 days for a full refund.
