I'm in Indonesia, my friend just bring me a iphone 3g which bought in hongkong and the seller said is official unlocked but after insert my Indonesia simcard in it. It got no signal at all I connect it to itune nothing happen except it said a newer software available is 2.2.1 should I upgrade it will fixed the problem? Sorry, I'm really new about this iphone stuff . What I want to ask it how can I know it is really a official unlocked iphone or my friend is manipulated by the seller. Please any master of iphone can help me out. And one more stupid question what is the benefits between official unlock and jailbreak. Cheers

Don't update to 2.2.1 because if it not factory unlocked you want be able to use yellowsn0w.

Look HERE for your 3G's (MB) part number and see if it matches a factory unlocked country

If it doesn't you've been mislead

Oh My god, thanks for you quick reply, this one is not factory unlock, the seller is cheating, because I check the phone Part Numbers is MB496PL/A, so what should I do now, I think only way is jailbreak the iphone right? Please post me link explain how can I do it? Or is there anyway to get factory unlock. and what is the bad about jailbreak, because I'm a newbie please help thanks you all

Sorry to ask again I saw on my iphone screen has Cydia, is this one already jailbreak, why it got no signal? Look in Settings/General/About to see if the Modem Firmware version 02.28 or not also look at the Manage/Packages in Cydia to see if Yellowsn0w is already installed.

If you have Cydia on the phone your don't really need to jailbreak again as its already done, just look in Cydia to see if yellowsn0w is installed.

Yes I found it with Cydia > manage > yellowsn0w 9.8, is it need to run, because my sim card still get no signal. Thanks you

Yes its needed to have an unlock.

Try turning Airplane Mode On & Off because thats been known to make the signal work again.
