I'm a new owner to a 16gb wht in HK too, there's no SIM lock to the HK phone. But forget it guys, you can NOT get it without a contract here. You'll need local address, ID etc to get one and the 24 contract with the phone will run you approx. US$1.1K 3's plan can be found here:

In Australia they don't have to be unlocked by law, but one of the carriers selling it out here will unlock it free of charge.

Does the Three iPhone also work with foreign SIM-cards or is it country locked to only HK operators?

I think you talking about Optus Network in Australia, but lots of people didn't read the fine print when they are purchasing a pre-paid iphone $729aud 8GB $849aud 16GB

It has stated Optus will release the unlock code six months later from the day you activated.

Be aware don't get ripped off of buying a pre-paid iphone from australia ebay.

All the sellers don't want to tell you that.

It is possible to use foregin SIM (by means of roaming), but not tried in its origin country.

Actually, it's on their FAQ that for Pre-Paid plan, it says "With Optus Pre-Paid an $80 fee applies if network locking is removed within the first 6 months from the activation date. Alternatively, the customer needs to have recharged up to the value of $80."
