    Question [iPhone 3G] GPS reception?

just wanted to find out what other suers are findinf about the time it takes the GPS in maps to pinpoint your location.
on the reviews I read they said it was pretty quick, think one said 10-20 seconds?

sometimes for me it is really quick, but other times it can take like 5-10 mins for it to be located. I'm based in the UK, but it shouldn't make any difference for the GPS.

    anyone having this issue?

It takes 5-6 sec for me and I am in house right now, unless it remembers my previous location its very quick fix.

doesnt google maps use the wifi, and isnt that faster than 3G, and isnt it going at Edge speed when 3G is not available

maybe the slow gps folk are on EDGE

no, 3G, Edge, WiFi etc. are only for downloading the maps, not for gps itself. The gps is run off a separate chip that uses satellites as well as WiFi and Network towers for the complete A-GPS (assisted gps) system. So gps reception would most likely be affected by the strength of signal the phone has with the satellite, and wifi, 3g, etc. are for downloading the maps showing ur location.

I am also not positive about what i said, so plz, if i am wrong, someone correct me.

Actually the iphone 3G first uses WiFi, then Cell towers and finally GPS to locate you. (depending on what is available)

    ok,

and when it displays the blue dot on the map, the map gets drawn by the internet connected google maps

    > 3G, Edge, WiFi etc. are only for downloading the maps, not for gps itself

    I agree!

I'm having the same issue, sometimes it will work quickly. But usually it takes a REALLY long time, or it doesn't locate me at all. Even when I'm outside :-\
Any ideas? I think I'm just gonna take it in and see next time I'm near an Apple store.
