[iPhone 3G] Check Build for Firmware 2.0 and Restore Before Syncing!!
I purchased an iPhone 3G yesterday and noticed that it was buggy - software lags, weak WiFi and cellular connections - it just didn't seem like a final product! I was assuming that the latest build was on the iPhone since I checked on the button to look for updates in iTunes last night before synching my iPhone, and it informed me that my iPhone was up to date.
This morning, I looked at the build and noticed that it was 5A345 (the latest build is 5A347). So it seems like iTunes cannot differentiate between a later build if the firmware version is the same (it seems like a flaw in iTunes). Now I will have to do a "Restore" tonight and synch all of the information again - a royal pain in the neck and a waste of time!
So here is my advice: Check the build on your iPhone before you synch it and set up all of your information! If the firmware 2.0 build is 5A345, do a "Restore", and iTunes should install the latest (and final) build (5A347) to your iPhone from Apple's servers. Then do the synch after you have done the restore.
Hopefully build 5A347 is more stable, runs faster, and does not have connection issues. I was also having trouble setting up the Remote app to my iTunes (probably because the WiFi connection was buggy - fingers crossed). Has anybody noticed if build 5A347 runs faster and has WiFi and cellular connection improvements over build 5A345? I truly hope that that is the issue that I am having because this firmware is definitely more buggy than firmware 1.1.4!
Thank you for any input!

2.0 is definately more buggy than 1.1.4, but thats of course i was installing a lot of apps at the same time.
remote works fine for me.
btw, i had a kernel panic which cause a hard reset!

All the iPhones have 5A345 installed, i did a restore and installed the 5A347 but it's exactely the same buggy release.
Weak 3G signal, dely 3-4 seconds on contacts, and mail closing to homescreen frequently.
Dramatic 5 hours battery life with push ON and 3G On.
This release NEEDS improvements, 1.1.4 was much better.

Thanks for the reply. I thought that my iPhone was a dud due to the lag. It can't be just because of the apps because I had a jailbroken first generation iPhone running firmware 1.1.4 - with apps installed, and it worked well! Apple really needs to improve this firmware. It seems like it is extremely buggy, the WiFi connection does not work well (when I place a first generation iPhone with firmware 1.1.4, the reception on firmware 1.1.4 is much better). I am also seeing issues with cellular connection (going from five bars to no bars). 3G is available in my area (northern New Jersey/New York City in the United States), but when I am on the train, the 3G icon changes to Edge at times. Also, when I am at home (in my house, the 3G icon changes to Edge - not an issue since I have WiFi, but the Apple site shows that there is 3G in my home area). And it seems like build 5A347 is not much better!
I am not very pleased with this firmware or with MobileMe, as I am having syncing problems when syncing MobileMe with Outlook 2007 on a Windows Vista laptop. I hope that Apple tweaks this firmware quite a bit and provides us with a release soon! Apple has been working on this firmware for quite some time, so I expected it to run much more smoothly!

Maybe it has something to do with restoring then syncing with the back up of the old hacked firmware?

That's definitely not the reason because I set up the iPhone 3G as a new phone. I did not back up the first generation iPhone. However, I still have not restored to build 5A347. I will do that tonigt. Hopefully there will be some improvements.

It'll take Apple roughly 3 months before all the issues are ironed out.

Unlock, activation, jailbreak: PwnageTool 3.1

UPDATE (not great news): I restored to build 5A347, and waited almost 2 hours for the backup to finish (what is up with that - and this was a restore with backup from the 2.0 firmware - not from a jailbroken and unlocked 1.1.4). The end result was nothing major to report. The WiFi signal is still weaker than on my original iPhone, and I now get zero bars (with 3G cellular service) in places in which I would receive service with the original iPhone. I have become a bit disappointed with firmware 2.0 and with 3G. I hope that Apple will work on these issues quickly and provide us with an update soon!
