Default [iPhone 3G] Battery life not as bad as it seems??

I've been having trouble lasting the day without my phone being in the red. With my 1st gen iPhone my battery would be 75% or higher at the end of the day (With bluetooth and wifi on) --- I don't typically play a lot with my phone during the work day. I run my iPhone 3G on Edge mode unless I'm using it interactively. I've turned off location services, I've even turned off Push and manual fetch!! My phone was in the red zone by 7:30-8pm (I took it off the charger at 9am, so less than 12 hours).

Here's where it gets interesting: I got the 20% battery message hours ago... I've decided to see how long it will last, I'm playing music and so far the phone hasn't died! I have a feeling he battery is in need of calibration... IE: Let it drain until the phone no longer works / turns on and charge it..... Going to see how long I can milk it in the red zone. I bet it''ll last me another half day or longer (I've barely used it and I'm not pushing/pulling mail automatically right now)

    Anyone else have this problem?

I can't go a whole day without charging my 3G. I tried calibrating last night and instead of about 12 hours, I got 18. That's in EDGE mode, location off, WiFi off for most of the day and about 20-30 minutes of talk time.
When I decided to calibrate yesterday, it took me longer than I thought to drain the remaining 20% of the battery also. I had the Simpsons movie on and I almost watched the whole movie before it ran out of juice.

It is no surprise (and has already been well documented) that the 3G iPhone gets great battery life without 3G on, but leaving it off kinda defeats the purpose of upgrading, don't you think?

Poor battery life is a dealbreaker for me, which sucks because I really, really want to update, but i'm not paying $300 + $10 more a month just to have to charge my phone twice as often.

I disagree with your comments on turning off the 3G and defeating the purpose.

3G is needed in few cases...browsing, youtube, google maps, and whatever else app needs high speed...

Turning on 3G when doing those serves the purpose. Unless you are using one of those apps at any given time (which then means you have no life and therefore should be able to charge ur phone on demand and therefore have nothing to complain about).

Turning off 3G when you don't need it is better for your battery and your reception anyway. Use it wisely thats all.

I'm waiting for some apps or settings that will be able to make more intelligent choices for data use whether it is WiFi, 3G, or EDGE.

I'm also finding that it sometimes tries to pickup WiFi signals when driving. This should not occur unless I want it too, so probably using even more battery being wasted.
