Default iPhone 3G Activation WITH orig SIM not possible - Help

    Hello,

A few months ago I JB my iPhone 3G firmware 4.01 with Sn0wBreeze and successfully unlocked it with UltraSn0w...everything worked fine until I decided to clear all data and settings to hand the phone to my brother...I had some problems so I decided to restore to 3.1.3 firmware through iTunes 10. Everything went fine, however I was not able to activate the iphone 3g using the original carrier SIM nor the AT&T SIM (I got from eBay).

Now, when I connect that to iTunes it says...

"The SIM card inserted in this iPhone does not appear to be a supported AT&T SIM card. [...] Only compatible AT&T SIM cards may be used to activate iPhone. Please insert the SIM card that came with your iPhone or visit an AT&T store to receive a replacement SIM card."

.... Many ppl have the same problem because they no longer have the original SIM, but I do(!), I even have an additional AT&T SIM for this purposes but still get that message. Does anyone know what the problem could be? or how I can fix this?

My iPhone is: 3G, current firmware 3.1.3, Baseband 05.14.03
    iTunees version 10

    Thanks for your help!

Apple has recently tweaked their activation servers to prevent activation with phonebook sims and similar. Maybe this is part of your problem.

Also, in my experience, you need to have an AT&T sim that has previously been associated with an iPhone (eg a deactivated SIM after you had upgraded to a new iPhone)

Hello Olethros, thank you for your quick reply.... I should add that I actually own the (legit) SIM for the iPhone (3G FW 3.1.3) I am trying to activate. (Carrier Telefonica Movistar) but I had it Jailbroken and Unlocked (on 4.0.1) because I wanted it to use on a different carrier ... now I recently got a iPhone 3GS which I kept for myself and gave the (old) 3G iPhone to my mother.... so I downgraded the 3G to 3.1.3 firmware and inserted the original SIM to have it work with the official carrier....no success (I don't intend to JB it this time...my mom won't need a jailbroken iDevice).

Another very important thing I should add: The new 3GS was also carrier locked, but I managed to JB and UL it using a AT&T activation SIM (no Phonebook, no generic activation card)...this was 3 days ago... activation passed on second run... I tried to activate the 3G with the same activated AT&T SIM... as you suggested , but still have the same message on iTunes.

    Info to my phones:

    3G: fw 3.1.3 , baseband: 05.14.03 , bootloader: 5.9 , model: MB500
    3GS: fw 3.1.1, baseband: 05.12.01, bootloader: 6.4 , model: MC135
    iTunes: 10.1

I have saved the SHSH for both phones

I have been searching for 3 days in many, many, many forums before posting this thread ... I haven found anything that could help (except Redsn0w or Limera1n but Redsnow does not recognize the IPSWs and Limerain does not get passed the "DFU MODE, WAIT..." window)

    please help!

This baseband cannot be unlocked right now. It can easily be jailbroken and hacktivated with redsn0w 0.9.2 though - that will allow you to use it for everything except making phone calls.

This baseband can be unlocked, however there is no public jailbreak tool that can jailbreak 3.1.3 without first activating it. You said that you had managed to activate it. If that is the case, you can jailbreak with eitrher jailbreakme or spirit and then unlock with ultrasn0w.

If you cannot activate this device, then your best option is to use pwnagetool 4.1.2 to restore to custom iOS 4.1 and then unlock with ultrasn0w.

    Exclamation Solved!

    Hello Olethros,

I finally was able to activate my "old" 3G iPhone. The fix, wasn't actually a fix or a workaround per say, it was my mistake. I thought I should share it since it might just as well happen to anyone else who is "missing the obvious".

    Here it goes...

..as I previously mentioned, the authorized carrier for this iPhone was Telefonica Movistar Venezuela, so I took the Telefonica Movistar SIM Card I gave my mother when she came to visit me from Mexico the first time.... what I didn't expect, was that she gave me a Telefonica Movistar Mexico SIM Card (she uses in Mexico)....both SIM Cards look EXACTLY the same! .... I didnīt know she had a "second" SIM (the one I actually needed for activation).... days after sweating and trying to Jailbreak and unlock with Redsnow and Snowbreeze (which BTW did not recognize the IPSW's I DL from different sources) I finally was able to activate the mentioned iPhone by just inserting the proper SIM Card.

I thought I should mention this, since there are many, many other carriers (like O2,Telecel and Vodafone) that operate on many different countries..this could happen to users who use the same carrier on different countries.

...however...there is one thing that still doesn't make sense at all: The AT&T SIM Activation Card I successfully used 2 days earlier on my new 3GS. It worked flawlessly. Why wasn't it possible to use the same card on the 3G? Do I need a new AT&T activation SIM Card for every iphone I want to activate? I thought these would activate as many phones I wanted to activate(!). BTW, the 3GS is a Movistar Venezuela phone as well....so it should have worked on both phones. I was planning to use the iOS 4.01 on my 3GS but don't want to be stuck on the same situation again.

    Best regards,

    hextazy

    1) Don't threadjack year+ old threads when your problem is for a different model phone, and opposite of the problem the original poster had. You also posted in the iPhone 3G forum with a 4S problem. Makes it hard for people to find your problem to attempt to help.
    2) You will need a SIM card for the network that the phone is locked to. You don't need the 'original' SIM, and you don't even need a SIM that is active on the network. You just need a SIM card for the network the phone is locked to. You cannot activate the 4S without this, there is no way to do so yet.
The preceding forum post has been brought to you by the letter "N" and the number 42.
