[iPhone 3G] 3G Activation with Pay and Go on O2
Hi,
Is it possible to activate an unactivated and sealed iPhone 3G with a PAYG Sim card using iTunes at home?
Thanks!

Yes, I bought one on July 11th and requested my nymber to be transferred over from o2 pay and go, seen as I did not want to wait to use my Iphone I thought I would try sticking my pay and go card in the phone - Connected to itunes and worked!!

That's great!
Thanks for the fast response...

do you think this would work with an o2 contract sim
so i could buy an iphone from the o2 store, take it home, and then activate it with an o2 pay as you go sim
and then once its activated does anyone know if it would work with an o2 contract sim ??
thanks in advance

All O2 SIMs work with the old iPhone and possibly the new iPhone (I have not tried activating a 3G with one) however the activation process is now simply entering your itunes password so I don't see any reason why it should be any different.
So any O2 SIM will work with either iPhones for activation and you can swap between them.
iPhone US 8GB
FW 1.0.2--> iUnlock--> iPhoneSIMfree--> 1.1.1 --> 1.1.2--> Soft upgrade 1.1.3 --> 1.1.4 using signal.app
iPhone UK 16GB
FW 1.1.3 OOB --> 1.1.4 --> iPlus 1.2 unlocked!
<----If I helped you out, rep points are always nice (thanks for that idea!)

As far as I'm aware I have tested with o2 pay and go, see previous post, and now I have a contract sim in the phone, I think that any o2 sim can be activated with iPhone

You cannot get a 3G iphone without signing a new contract instore or upgrading an existing contract. it is not sold like the first gen iphone where you just purchased it instore and activated at home. you have to commit instore to an 18 month contract

unless you buy an italian iphone 3g off ebay (like i have)! then you can use ANY uk sim card in it as they are sold unlocked. Not a cheap option though...

so if i can buy an iphone 3g from a certain someone
working at a carphone warehouse without signing a contract for £100
then technically i could put my current o2 sim inside the phone and it will work
correct ?

As long as it is a legit deal, then yes. If it is knocked off, then it will probably end up being blocked by O2 using the IMEI disable function if it is discovered missing from stock at CPW. All serial numbers and IMEI are in their systems but good luck, wish I could have one with that deal :-)
