Question iPhone 2.0 Operating System - True Capacity / Size

    Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows the size of the new iPhone 2.0 operating system. I am planning on upgrading my iPhone and the $199 price sounds hard to beat. I can get by with 8GB...but with all the new App Store downloads I might want to invest the $100 more in the 16GB...yet I would like to know what the true capacity might be, because I might just live with the 8GB...I have been very happy with my 8GB so far...

    Cheers,
    -luckyclover

Correct me if I am wrong anyone, but I am pretty sure that to find the true capacity of a hard drive (that is how much a hard drive could hold after formatting) you take rougly 7-9% off what it actually says. So an 8 GB iPhone would hold approximately 7.44 GB and a 16 GB would hold approximately 14.88 GB. All those values are probably plus or minus about .3 GB.

That isn't the question that was asked. The OP was asking how much space the new operating system takes and whether the resultant free space would be significantly reduced from 1.0. (And BTW it's not a hard drive, it's flash - I know flash is "hard" but that is not what conventionally defines a hard drive, it is a hard disk platter as compared with a floppy one).

That is a good question, will apps be stored in the system partition still? And how big will the system parttition be?

But to answer your question, the ipsw is what? 200ishmb? That is compressed, so the 8GB version would have about 7.5GB media capacity, and the 16GB would have about 15GB. That is just my opinion.

Hope this helps answer your questions.. On B8, the general about shows capacity @ 7.1 GB (on an 8GB).

Official apps will not be stored in the system partition, which I assume will still be non writable without hacking, so that stands to reason, they'll be stored in the user media partition somewhere.

Well I thought that maybe the default apps e.g. iTunes, App Store, SMS, iPod, Mail, Calculator, Calendar, etc would be in the system partition, then apps from the app store would be in the media partition somewhere. I dont know but that is my thought

yes, the inbuilt apps will remain in the non writable partition, no reason to move them, will be interesting to see if they've done anything to make jailbreaking and putting other apps in there harder really.
